AIM (1)

The document outlines an experiment to estimate the charge induced on two identical Styrofoam balls using Coulomb's law. It includes details on the apparatus, theory of electric charges, procedure for conducting the experiment, observations, precautions, sources of error, acknowledgments, and a teacher's certificate. The experiment demonstrates the principles of electric charge interaction and measurement of induced charges.

AIM: To estimate the charge induced on each one of the two

identical Styrofoam( foil) balls suspended in a vertical plane by

making use of Coulomb’s law.

Apparatus:

For small identical balls of Styrofoam/foil, a sensitive physical balance, cotton

thread, a half meter scale, a rigid stand, a glass rod, and a piece of silk cloth.

Theory:

Two kinds of electric charges. The charge developed on a glass rod when
rubbed with silk is called positive charge, while the charge developed on plastic
rod rubbed with fur is called negative charge.
During rubbing, electrons are transferred from the object with lower work
function to another with higher work function. The object with excess of
electrons develops a negative charge, while the object deficit of electrons
develop a positive charge.

Like charges repel and unlike charges attract.

Coulomb’s law: According to Coulomb’s law, the force of attraction

or repulsion between two charged bodies is directly proportional to
the product of their charges and inversely proportional to the
square of the distance between them. It acts along the line joining
the two charges considered to be point charges.
Procedure:

1. Take two identical balls. With the help of a sensitive balance, measure
the mass of each ball.
2. Hang the two balls from rigid support using light silk or cotton threads of
the same length. By using a half metre scale, measure the length of each
thread.
3. Rub the glass rod with a silk cloth. A positive charge is developed on the
glass rod. Now touch the glass rod with both balls together. Two balls
acquire an equal positive charge.
4. When left freely, the balls repel each other. Measure the distance
between balls using a half-metre scale.
5. To change the charge on one ball, take third similar uncharged ball and
touch it with this ball. The two balls share equal charges. Take the third
ball away and measure the distance.
6. Touch the other suspended ball with 4th uncharged ball and take the 4th
ball away from the suspended balls. Measure the equilibrium

A and B
1. q q 1.35
2. q/2 q/2 1
3. q/2 q/2 0.625
Precautions

1. Both the balls should be charged similarly so that both

acquire equal charges.
2. Mass should be measured accurately.
3. The charged body should not be touched with naked
hands.

Sources of Error

1. Two balls may not have the same size and mass
2. Lengths of threads and equilibrium separation might
not have been measured accurately.

Introduction
During rubbing, electrons are transferred from the object
with lower work function to another with higher work
function. The object with excess of electrons develops a
negative charge, while the object deficit of electrons develop
a positive charge.
With the help of this principle, we will now find out the
induced charge of these balls.
