Department of Electrical Engineering

End-Semester Examination, 2023
Session:2022-2023 (Spring)
B.Tech., 2nd Semester
Basic Electrical Engineering
Subject Code: EE-1000

Number of Pages: 2 Full Marks: 50 Duration: 3 Hours

Symbols and abbreviations have usual meaning.

1. In the circuit shown in Figure 1, find the maximum power that can be transferred to the load
resistance RL . (5 marks)

Figure 1:

2. A 440V, 50 Hz AC single phase source supplies power to a load ZL = (10 + j2)Ω through a
transmission line having total resistance of 1.5Ω. The transmission line has no reactance. Find
(a) the active power supplied to the load,
(b) source power factor,
(c) the value of capacitance to be added in parallel with ZL to get unity power factor at source.
(d) draw phasor diagram for total current and all the branch currents in part (c) indicating
magnitude and phase. (0.5+0.5+2+2=5 marks)

3. Two wattmeters are connected to measure power in a three-phase circuit. The reading of one of
the wattmeters is 7 kW when load power factor is unity. If the power factor of the load is changed
to 0.707 lagging without changing the total input power, calculate
(a) total input power,
(b) readings of the two wattmeters. (5 marks)

4. A cast steel magnetic structure made for a bar of section 8 cm × 2 cm is shown in Figure 2.
Determine the current that the 500 turn-magnetising coil on the left limb should carry so that a
flux of 2 mWb is produced in the right limb. Take µr = 600 and neglect leakage. (5 marks)

5. The SC test data on a 10 kVA, 2300/230 V single-phase transformer are as follows: 90 V, 4.3 A,
290 W. If the low voltage side is delivering 85% of rated load at 0.8 PF lag, and at 230 V, find
(a) the corresponding voltage applied on the high voltage side.
(b) the voltage regulation at this loading condition. (5+2 = 7 marks)

6. A 15 kVA, 1100/220 V, 50 Hz single phase transformer has following test results:

SC test: 45 V, 13.6 A, 450 W
OC test: 220 V, 3.8 A, 520 W
(a) Calculate the series and shunt branch parameters of the transformer referred to the high
voltage side and draw the equivalent circuit.
(b) Calculate the efficiency of the transformer at 70% of rated load at unity power factor. (6+2
= 8 marks)

7. A 220 V, 10 kW dc shunt motor takes 4 A when running at no load. For an armature resistance
of 0.5Ω and field resistance of 220Ω, find the full-load efficiency. Neglect brush voltage drop. (6
marks)

8. A 4 pole, 500 V dc shunt motor has 720 wave-connected conductors on its armature. The full load
armature current is 60 A and the flux per pole is 0.03 Wb. The armature resistance is 0.2Ω and
the brush contact drop is 1 V per brush. Calculate the full load speed of the motor. (4 marks)

9. A 240 V series motor takes 40 A when giving its rated output at 1500 rpm. The total armature
and field resistance is 0.3Ω. What resistance must be added to obtain rated torque
(a) at starting,
(b) at 1000 rpm. (5 marks)
