Course: English 101

Communication Skills in English

Second Semester -2024-2025

Course Outline

This is a blended course that combines classroom meetings and some asynchronous online educational
materials which will be uploaded regularly on JUST E-Learning System. (E-learning web address:
www.Just.edu.jo/elearning ). It’s the student's responsibility to check the E-learning system regularly for any
materials or announcements.

Course Textbook and Materials:

Textbook: Virginia Evans & Jenny Dooley. I Discover 7. Express Publishing

(Note: the textbook is available at JUST bookshop.)

Main Objective
This course focuses on developing the student’s ability and accuracy in using professional English
language while developing their skills in verbal communication by learning effective listening skills along
with verbal and non-verbal communication. The course uses scientific and practical training, with an
emphasis on comprehension and comprehension skills in speaking, reading, and writing.
This course integrates grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, pronunciation, and writing. The
course aims at improving the four major skills of the English language: listening, speaking, reading, and
writing.
In addition, students will be trained for job interviewing, performing roles, storytelling and dialogue,
persuasion, conflict resolution skills, and CV writing.

IN THIS COURSE, STUDENTS WILL:

• Practice and expand the language skills necessary for success in the professional world.
• Practice and demonstrate fluent and accurate spoken English.
• Develop new effective communicative skills.
• Explain the components and concept of basic communication skills such as listening, dressing,
and confidence.
• Listen effectively, persuade others, ask questions and develop sound dialogue.
• Deal with positive and negative situations with social intelligence and in professional manners.
• Practice self-promotion skills along with job search, resume writing, and personal interviews
skills.
• Prepare a CV in both Arabic and English in a professional manner.
• Form a positive impression during various interviews.
• Use grammatically sound spoken & written language.

THE COURSE INCLUDES:

General Points
1. Instructors in this course will be checking attendance regularly. Absence is to be regularly marked on
https://services.just.edu.jo/Portal_Attendance/. Students should check Student Services to know
the number of absences they have.
2. If you encounter any situation that interrupts your ability to attend the officially scheduled exam, you
have to submit an online request for a makeup exam. Once your make-up exam request is approved,
you will be notified via email and the make-up exams dates and places will be announced at JUST
Language Center.
3. It is the student's responsibility to check the E-learning system regularly for any announcements.
4. In this online learning environment, outside of the instructor's office hours, communicating with
your instructor throughout the semester should be via email or e learning messages.
5. The students will sit for 3 quizzes and the top 2 quizzes will be counted in their total grade. The
topics of 101 quizzes will include: traits of effective technical writing, the process of CV writing,
linking words, etc.

Assessment

Mid-term Exam: 40%


E-learning Online Quizzes 20%
Final Exam: 40 %
Total: 100%
