Problem Statement
You are part of a research team tasked with designing a motor drive system for an electric vehicle
(EV) intended for personal transportation within university campuses. The vehicle is expected to
carry 100 kg vehicle weight +2 persons ( ∼ 70 kg each) and reach a maximum speed of 4000 rpm.

Your objective is to:

• Select an appropriate motor,

• Model it mathematically,

• Design and simulate a high-performance control system using MATLAB/Simulink,

• Validate your design through open-loop and closed-loop analysis under varying conditions,

• Incorporate the effect of the power electronic converter in the drive system.

Task 1: Motor Selection & Parameter Identification

• Select a suitable motor (e.g., PMSM, BLDC, or DC motor) for the required load and speed.

• Calculate required power and torque: Total mass ≈ 100 kg + 2 × 70 = 240 kg

• Assume acceleration (e.g., 0 to 30 km/h in 10 seconds), wheel radius, etc.

• Extract machine parameters from a manufacturer datasheet.

Task 2: System Modeling

• Derive the differential equations of the motor.

• Obtain the transfer function (torque or speed as output).

• Develop a state-space model for speed control purposes.

Task 3: Open-Loop Analysis

• Apply step and ramp inputs to the system.

• Simulate open-loop performance under three load levels (e.g., 40%, 60%, 100%).

Task 4: Closed-Loop Controller Design

• Design a PID or PI controller meeting the following criteria:

– Steady-state error < 2%

– Settling time < 2 seconds
– Overshoot ≤ 5%

• Create a speed profile ( 10 segments, 2 minutes total):

– 5 speed levels, with ramps, acceleration/deceleration, and reverse direction.

Task 5: Load Disturbance Rejection

• Introduce a load change from 40% to 80% while maintaining constant speed.

• Demonstrate the controller’s robustness to this disturbance.

Task 6: Frequency Domain Analysis & Compensator Design

• Determine the required phase margin and bandwidth for 5% overshoot.

• Design a lead or PID compensator to achieve a phase margin of 45◦ .

• Show Bode and Nyquist plots before and after compensation.

Task 7: Power Electronic Converter Integration

• Select a suitable DC-DC converter (e.g., buck or buck-boost) for the motor drive.

• Derive its state-space model and transfer function.

• Simulate its open-loop performance with varying input voltages and loads.

Task 8: Integrated Control System

• Add the converter to the motor control loop.

• Tune the PID controller to maintain performance with converter dynamics included.
