ABSTRACT

Background: Hockey is a fast – paced and high intensity sport that requires players to possess
various physical attributes, including strength, power, agility, and endurance. It requires
explosive movement, quick change in direction, and constant upper and lower body coordination
purpose. The 5-0-5 Agility Test is a comprehensive assessment that integrates key athletic
components such as speed, agility. Reliability of this test is (r = 0.88–0.95) this test is highly
reliable and valid measures of change of direction.

Purpose: This study is intended to establish the reference score for 5-0-5 agility test among
recreational hockey players.

Methodology: A sample of recreational hockey players will be recruited and undergo the 5-0-5
agility test, establish reference score for 5-0-5 agility test. An observational study will be
conducted among recreational hockey players of age group between 18 -25 years 5-0-5 agility
test.

Data analysis: Data will be analyzed by using SPSS software version 24. Each participate will
be assessed to perform 5-0-5 agility test for three times , mean value of 5-0-5 agility test will be
take for data analysis.

Discussion: The results will be obtained upon completion of this study that is reference score of
5-0-5 agility test.

Conclusion: Establish reference score for 5-0-5 agility test among recreational hockey players.

Keyword: Physical fitness, speed, endurance, agility.

Introduction

Field Hockey is a popular sport across the globe. According to many studies athletes who
participate in this sports experience constant stress, which causes ongoing tearing phenomena in
their posture’s structure and function. This game requires ten players and a goal keeper and is
played by both men and woman with a wooden hockey stick and a white synthetic ball1.
It has 3 positional groups that is Strikers, Mid-fielders and Defender 2. They run an average of
around 10-12 km in a game of 60 minutes played in 4 periods each of 15 minutes, With the help
of Manual video based time motion analysis, we can say that an international player spent most
of the match exercising at lower speed that is Walking, Standing & Jogging for a small time with
higher speeds that is sprinting and Running1.
Agility is known as the ability to control body position and swiftly change direction without the
loss of speed control and balance. It is very important factor for all fast paced sports 3.Agility is
one of the ability of motor skill which is horizontal change in the direction of the whole body.
such as maneuvers or avoiding the opponent; vertical change in the direction of the body such as
jumping, skipping and rapid movement of certain parts of the body that control props in hockey.
There are 2 main components of agility that is change of direction ,speed, perception and
decision making factor .The most common features for assessing agility are rapid start with
acceleration, deceleration to relative stop .To accelerate or decelerate, movement technique and
rapid change in direction , perceptual and decision making factor are further divided into 4 factor
that is visual scanning , pattern recognize and knowledge of situation .change of direction speed
completely depends upon technique, straight splinting, speed, leg muscle qualities and
anthropometric characteristics .Technique could be described as foot placement adjustment of
stride to accelerate and decelerate body lean and posture ,leg muscles qualities means are
strength , power and reactive strength4.
The 5-0-5 agility test is a widely used practice in sports. 180˚ change of direction in sports, such
as soccer, basketball, and tennis, requires the ability to accelerate, decelerate, turn 180˚, and
reaccelerate again. The 5-0-5 agility test can be utilized to assess an athlete’s ability to sprint
5m, perform 180˚ change of direction, and sprint 5m back through the timing gates. Multiple
sports require an athlete to perform this task during play. For example, in hockey if the ball was

5
overturned then the athlete will have to decelerate as fast as possible, perform 180˚change of
direction turn, and reaccelerate quickly get back to a position to defend. The purpose of this
study is to assess agilty and establish a reference score among recreational hockey players.

Need of the Study:

• 5-0-5 agility can be utilized to assess an athlete’s ability to sprint 5m, perform 180 degree
change of direction , and sprint 5m back through the timing gates .
• As the hockey involves rapid direction changes whether moving towards the ball,
dodging opponents, or positioning defensively. This test evaluates an athlete’s ability to
accelerate, de accelerate and change direction, all crucial for hockey performance.
