Addition of Polynomials

Grade Level: 9-10

Subject: Algebra
Duration: 60 minutes
Materials Needed:

 Whiteboard/Chalkboard
 Markers/Chalk
 Handouts (for practice problems)
 Graphing calculators (optional)

Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Define polynomials and understand their components.

2. Add polynomials by combining like terms.
3. Simplify polynomial expressions.
4. Apply polynomial addition to real-world problems.

Standards:

 CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.APR.B.2: Add and subtract polynomials.

 CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.APR.A.1: Understand the structure of expressions.

Lesson Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

 Engage students by asking questions like:

o "What do you understand by an algebraic expression?"
o "What are terms, and what does it mean to combine them?"
 Introduce polynomials: A polynomial is an expression consisting of variables,
coefficients, and exponents. Examples: 3x2+5x+23x^2 + 5x + 23x2+5x+2, x3−4x+7x^3 -
4x + 7x3−4x+7.
 Key Concept: Emphasize that polynomials are made up of terms, and each term is a
product of a coefficient and a power of a variable.
 Review Like Terms: Like terms have the same variable raised to the same power.
Example: 3x23x^23x2 and 5x25x^25x2 are like terms, but 3x23x^23x2 and 4x4x4x are
not.

2. Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

 Demonstrate polynomial addition:

1. Write two polynomials on the board:
3x2+5x+23x^2 + 5x + 23x2+5x+2 and 4x2−3x+64x^2 - 3x + 64x2−3x+6.
2. Explain that to add polynomials, you combine like terms.
So, 3x2+4x2=7x23x^2 + 4x^2 = 7x^23x2+4x2=7x2, 5x−3x=2x5x - 3x =
2x5x−3x=2x, and the constants 2+6=82 + 6 = 82+6=8.
3. The result is:
7x2+2x+87x^2 + 2x + 87x2+2x+8.
 Breakdown: Write each step clearly on the board, explaining that only like terms can be
combined.
 Show another example with a different set of polynomials and go through the process
slowly, allowing students to ask questions.

3. Guided Practice (15 minutes)

 Hand out practice problems for students to complete in pairs or small groups.
 Example problems:
1. 2x2+3x+42x^2 + 3x + 42x2+3x+4 and 5x2−x+75x^2 - x + 75x2−x+7
2. 3x3+4x2+5x+63x^3 + 4x^2 + 5x + 63x3+4x2+5x+6 and 2x3−x2+3x−22x^3 - x^2
+ 3x - 22x3−x2+3x−2
 Support and monitor: Walk around the room to provide support, clarifying any
confusion about combining like terms.
 Encourage students to highlight like terms before adding.

4. Independent Practice (10 minutes)

 Provide students with individual practice problems to solve:

o 7x2+2x−37x^2 + 2x - 37x2+2x−3 and 3x2+4x+53x^2 + 4x + 53x2+4x+5
o 4x3−x2+2x+64x^3 - x^2 + 2x + 64x3−x2+2x+6 and −2x3+3x2+4-2x^3 + 3x^2 +
4−2x3+3x2+4
 Ask students to simplify and combine like terms.
 After completion, review answers with the class.

5. Application (5 minutes)

 Present a real-world scenario involving polynomial addition:

o "A company produces two different models of smartphones. The polynomial
5x2+10x+155x^2 + 10x + 155x2+10x+15 represents the profit for model A, and
3x2+5x+103x^2 + 5x + 103x2+5x+10 represents the profit for model B. What is
the total profit function for both models combined?"
 Solution: Add the polynomials:
5x2+10x+15+3x2+5x+10=8x2+15x+255x^2 + 10x + 15 + 3x^2 + 5x + 10 = 8x^2 + 15x
+ 255x2+10x+15+3x2+5x+10=8x2+15x+25.
 Discuss how the addition of polynomials can model real-world situations like total
profits, costs, or quantities.

6. Conclusion (5 minutes)

 Recap the lesson: Reinforce that adding polynomials involves combining like terms.
Highlight the importance of identifying the degree of the terms and ensuring terms are
combined correctly.
 Ask for questions to clarify any misunderstandings.
 Provide a brief summary or exit ticket for students to reflect on the key takeaway.

Assessment:

 Observe student participation during guided practice and independent practice.

 Review answers from individual practice problems.
 Exit ticket: "What is the key concept when adding polynomials, and why is it important?"

Homework (Optional):

Assign a set of polynomial addition problems to reinforce the lesson. Example:

 Add the following polynomials:

4x3−2x2+3x+84x^3 - 2x^2 + 3x + 84x3−2x2+3x+8 and −x3+5x2−2x+4-x^3 + 5x^2 - 2x
+ 4−x3+5x2−2x+4.

Modifications for Diverse Learners:

 For visual learners: Use color coding for terms to highlight like terms.
 For struggling students: Provide simpler polynomials to add, such as those with only
two terms.
 For advanced learners: Introduce problems with polynomials involving higher degrees
or terms that need to be simplified more carefully.
This lesson plan focuses on a step-by-step approach to adding polynomials, ensuring students
grasp the concept of combining like terms clearly and effectively. Let me know if you'd like
