INTRODUCTION
Street Lights is one of the basic needs for the families, motorist, and students.
However, access to street lights remains challenge for many rural areas, including in
Barangay Duncaan(Diversion Road, Tugbungan Going to Boalan). Traditional street
light is very expensive and cost to maintain because the street lightning systems is
powered by electricity from the grid. Additionally, the lack of Street lights can
increased risk of accidents, criminal activities, and pedestrian safety concerns. It also
hinders visibility for the drivers that making the area more dangerous, especially at
night. Solving this problem is essential to protect the safety of every individuals in the
Barangay Duncaan. This project aims to provide a sustainable, cost-effective solution
by installing solar street lights, safer roads, enhanced visibility, and improved overall
security.
But, the traditional street lights that powered by electricity from the grid poses
have several challenges. The systems are expensive to install, cost to maintain, and it
depends on a stable power supply which may not always be available in remote areas.
Due to high costs and limited resources, the Barangay Duncaan remains completely
dark at night.
Lack of street lights lead to danger. Poor visibility makes driving dangerous,
especially in curved roads. Students and workers walking during dawn or late
evenings are exposed to the dangers of road accidents and potential threats from
criminal activity.
The traditional street lights are expensive and cost to maintain because it
depends on the electrical grid, the traditional street lights have weakness, during
blackout the traditional solar street lights do not provide lights so it is hard for the
people to see especially at night. This project aims to reduce the problems by offering
a reliable, and renewable stand alone solar street lights, not only improves safety but
also supports environmental sustainability.
According to Allery (2018), the adoption of solar street lights is more efficient
and sustainable than the traditional street lights. This study compared the three
different street lights for a tribal community in North Dakota. These are the traditional
grid street lights, solar street lights with a microgrid, and stand alone solar street
lights. It conclude that The stand alone solar street light was the most affordable and
energy efficient among the two. Stand alone solar street light does not need a electric
grid so it reduce electricity costs, it is ecofriendly, that making them ideal for rural
and remote areas. The paper highlights how advances in LED technology and solar
Photovoltaic systems have made solar lighting a reliable, eco-friendly solution to
improve safety while conserving energy.
According to 96.3 iFM Zamboanga, aired on June 17, 2021, there are 4
victims of shooting in Tugbungan bypass road, an area known for being very dark at
3
night. The Scene of the Crime Operative (SOCO) were able to identify the one of the
victims, the victim is resident from Baranggay Mampang. The reporter stated that the
suspects used different kinds of firearms to commit the crime.
OBJECTIVES
1. Comparing the performance of solar street lights and traditional street lights in
terms of energy use and light quality.
2. Comparing the cost between solar street lights and traditional street lights.
3. Investigate the outcome of solar street lights on improving safety and security
in dark area.
The primary goal of this project is to provide sustainable and reliable street
lights in Barangay Duncaan by using the solar power technology. Second, is to
improve the safety and security of the residents where crimes and accidents to happen.
Third, this project is to reduce the costs of the local government by changing the
traditional street lights to solar street lights. It also environmental friendly because it
does not use fossil fuels and helps lowering the carbon emissions. Lastly, this project
will collaborate with the Local Government Unit (LGU) and the Department of Public

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
1. Site Assessment
The first step is to conduct a inspection of the road in Barangay
Duncaan. This inspection includes measuring the road length and
marking a ideal spot for installing the solar street lights.
2. Technical Planning
The next step is the specifications required of the solar street lights.
This includes choosing the standard pole height , LED light wattage,
solar panel capacity, and the size of the battery.
3. Coordination with LGU and DPWH
Coordinating with the Local Government Unit (LGU) and Department
of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) so that the projects will have
permits, clearances, and to ensure it follows with road safety standards.
4. Purchasing of Materials
This step is purchasing the materials needed for the project. LEDs,
batteries, and solar panels, controller, and etc.
5. Site Preparation and Installation
5
RESOURCES NEEDED
1. Solar Panel
This solar panel is one of the important device in constructing solar
street lights, it collects or recieve energy from sunlight and converts
into electricity.
2. Battery
During day time the energy stores in battery and at night provides
power to the LED lights.
3. LED
LED or Light Emitting Diode is a semiconductor device that emits
lights. It’s energy efficient because just small power can light the LED
compare to traditional bulb. Additionally, the LED life span is long.
4. Controller
Controller is for managing the flow of current and voltage going to
LED, battery, and solar panel. Also, the controller is responsible for
charging the battery during day time and at night the LED will light.
5. Pole
The pole is where to mount the solar panel, battery, LED, and
controller.
6. Cement
6
The cement is a substance to mix the sand and gravel to stick together.
7. Sand
The sand and cement mix together to smoothen the outer part of pole.
8. Gravel
The gravel mix with cement create concrete foundation for pole.
9. Wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers
The purpose of this tools are securing and mounting the screws and
bolts, as well as connecting the wires.
10. Drill machines
Drill machines are to make a hole in the soil.
11. Ladder
A ladder is use for higher places during constructing, maintenance, and
installation work.
12. Multimeter
To test or measure the voltage, current, polarity, and continuity.
13. Concrete mixer
Concrete tools is for mixing the gravel, sand, cement, and water to
make a foundation of the poles.
14. Cables and connector
The purpose of this is for connecting the solar panel, battery, LED, and
controller.
15. Excel
Use for costing the materials.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Installing of solar street lights in Baranggay Duncaan will have many benefits
in the community. First, there is improvement in public safety, because at night and
early morning there is a good visibility due to the solar street lights. Second, This
project also increased mobility of the residents in Baranggay Duncaan, especially for
students, workers and farmers, they travel more confidently and safely during the
early morning and evening. Third, this project supports sustainable infrastructure by
promoting the use of renewable energy, solar street lights offer a cost saving and good
illumination in the long run, because the operational and maintenance costs is less
compared to traditional solar street lights, additionally, the illumination of solar street
lights is more efficient and energy cost compared to traditional solar street lights
because it uses the technology of LED and the lifespan of LED is longer than
incandescent light bulb. Lastly, the presence of solar street lights will help the small
businesses, because the area is in the rural settings it attracts more people to come
especially at night.
One of the challenges of solar street lights is theft of equipment. Such as solar
panels, batteries, controllers, and etc. Using a security screw or tamper proof bolts and
secure mounting it will solve the problem because these screw is hard to remove.
Additionally, with the help of the baranggay tanods patrolling the streets, theft can be
prevented.
