Old Speaking Paper VS New Speaking Paper
The new speaking paper is nothing like the previous years. As it is aligned with the CEFR, we can see that
the new format has similarities with many international speaking tests out there.
OLD FORMAT (ULBS) NEW FORMAT (SPEAKING TEST)
P1 - Read a text P1 - General questions
P2 - Talk about a topic P2 - Narrate a story based on series of pictures
P3 - Discuss about a topic
Individual In pairs
PART 1
General Questions
This is the part where students answer to some simple questions. (e.g. name, age, class, mood,
etc.)
There should be no mark given from this part. It aims to help student get comfortable when
starting the test.
PART 2
This is a new exposure for our students, students will be assessed in pair but each is given a different topic
to talk about.
How to prepare:
As you can see, the topic and descriptions are pretty straight forward and we should get our
students to get used to the kind of vocabulary to use.
Use the questions to help you elaborate. Many students would lose the opportunities to use the
language if they only talk about 1or 2 things from the details.
Elaborate. It is very important for you to be able to converse and keep the conversation going.
Engage with markers and try to use your personal experience or information that you can relate to
in order for you to elaborate.

Phrasesyou could use:
EXCITEMENT
When the hullabaloo died down, the teacher continued his lesson. The keyed-up fans cheered
boisterously for every point.
She was so wrought up with nervous anticipation that she is unable to think clearly. It was a
wonderful morning. I opened the parcel with anticipation.
“Wow” I shouted with joy. It was my favorite Nike.
I was in utter disbelief and excitement. I could only manage to open my eyes wide and grin from
ear to ear.
The atmosphere in the concert hall was electrifying. Standing backstage, he heard the excited buzz
of the crowd and tried to tame the butterflies in the stomach.
FEAR
A few agonizing moments trickled by. Being all alone a terrible fear gripped my heart.
Fear enveloped me. My heart pounded and my throat was constricted. It was difficult to breathe.
Peter was scared stiff when the murderer’s face twisted into a hideous smile. She stood rooted to
the ground; her terrified gaze fixed on the dreadful sight.
Every bone in my body froze in terror. I could not get back to sleep. The eerie sounds of the night-
seemed to echo all around me.
Cold sweat trickled down my forehead. It was getting harder to breathe. A lump formed in my
throat. I tried my best to gulp it down. I opened my eyes as wide as I could in the darkness.
MOTHER
She has taught me to always try my best, to treat everyone equally, to not give up when things get
hard. She tells me to at all times be honest because in the end, lies always hurt more. When I make
decisions and she doesn't always agree with them, she makes sure that I know that she is behind
me all the way because she wants me to always be happy.
A time that is really prominent in my mind, that I hope I will always remember, is the year when I
was doing poorly in English class and I wanted to drop it. The "easy way out" as my mom called it.
She helped me realize that I was intelligent enough to be in the class that is why I was put in it, and
that I could do anything I put my mind to. The talk with my mom helped me tremendously.
Many things and many people in my life have mattered to me, and many of these same things and
people have also affected me in some profound, meaningful, and permanent way. Regardless of
this, however, there is one person in my life who has done more for me than anyone else my
mother.
As long as I can remember, my mother has been there for me. She took care of me when I was
little like all good mothers do, but the relationship that we had as I got older was actually more
important to me.

PART 3
This part involves two students talking to each other, what they are expected to do:
make a personal choice
give reasons
compare and contrast the pros and cons
agree or disagree
conclude
This is harder for most students because it not only needs you to have the language to say the things you
want to say, it also requires you to think about what makes your choice better?
How to prepare:
Enough language (words) to form your points/arguments.
Enough general knowledge to make a decision. (HOTS)
Speaking all comes down to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Teacher’s job is to guide you through
the process but YOU have to be willing to try and make mistakes.
Speaking is where you’re allowed to make so many mistakes and still make sense as long as your message
is sent accross. Pay attention to how English speakers form their sentences. Play that in your mind for
many times. And try using them in your everyday life. It works magic.
