INTRODUCTION
Static load tests of bridges are required to be done to check the overall integrity of the structure before
putting these into services. The job of these static load tests of bridges at various locations of this
highway were awarded to Geo Research House.
This report is about bridge load test carried out at Location.Ch- CH 10+875 (SPAN P2 TO A2) .The
test of this bridge was conducted from 19.03.2024 to 23.03.2024 as per approved drawing &
methodology by Contractor, Consultant & Client engineers.
The loading arrangement for test was planned according to the approved drawing prepared for the
purpose of testing the bridge. The drawing is based on the bridge designs, reviewed by Independent
Engineer as per IRC SP-5l-1999/2015 and IRC SP-37-2010 guidelines. The deflection study of
temperature variation, application of load and unloading was planned and conducted as per
consultation and review of Contractor, Consultant & Client engineers.
METHODOLOGY
To measure the deflections under loading, unloading and during temperature, the glass strips marked
crossed was placed on side of the bottom flange in Slab at L/4, IJ2 and 3L/4 positions. The Prism was
also placed near the Bridge to measure the defection of bearing during load test. The Total station has
least count of 1 mm. Proper lighting arrangement were made for the convenience of taking readings
during day and night.
The test procedure involved two stages. First stage involved to study the deflection of Solid Slab at
L/2 positions with temperature for about 24 hours continuously. The aim is to observe deflection due
to expansion and contraction of the structure with temperature variation. The temperature of the
bridge deck was measured with the help of four calibrated digital thermometers.

For measurement of temperature, digital thermometers were located close to location of Prism. Every
hour temperature and deflection reading were recorded in observation sheet. The variations of Total
station readings with temperature are shown in the enclosed observation sheet.
During the 12 hours of the temperature variation, deflections were recorded for expansion and
contraction of deck slab Measurement of temperature was done at every hour before 12 hours of
commencement of loading, and till 24 hours of completion of unloading. Temperature measurement
is necessary to see the effects of temperature on deflection of bridge deck and subsequent temperature
correction in final deflection.
The second stage involved to apply the static load on the deck slab for the strength and serviceability.
The calculated loads (including impact) to be placed on the deck are given in the reviewed drawing.
The load test is carried out on the superstructure of MJB is as detailed below.
Loading was done by using Formwork. Loads and their positions were placed as per reviewed
drawing and same is attached. Drawing no- 188-2582/AIZ-TUI/BR/AB/300 (SH.2 0F 2)
The load was applied in following stages as load chart
Initially the loading zone was marked on the deck slab as per drawing. The sequence of putting loads
by Formwork is shown in the approved drawing and attached with this report. The required load was
made ready before the test start. The readings of Total station are taken corresponding to the
following stages of loading, apart from these readings were taken allowing two hours in between
completion of one load increment and commencement of next load.

Maximum deflection cocured during the 24 hours with full load. The temperature correction is
applied to the maximum deflection so noticed. The position and magnitude of maximum deflection
was determined theoretically for comparison.

Unloading was done in the same sequence as loading was done by removing the vehicles allowing
one hour in between completion of one load decrement and commencement of next. Recovery part of
the study was carried out after unloading. Adequate recovery readings were observed for 24 hours
after unloading (Code permits 24 hours after unloading). The recovery at L/2 slab is calculated after
unloading areas detailed below.
L/2-PZ-1 90.54%
The recovery value is more than the value of 85% as per IRC: SP-51 : 1999 for Prestressed solid slab.
During the whole process of Loading/Unloading and after 24 hours unloading, the sofrit of the slab
was observed for any possible crack development. However, no visible crack was noticed under
loading during the entire process. Care was taken during the process that the base of the marked

of crack width does not arise.

4. The measured deflections are less than the theoretical deflections as per the reviewed
drawings and are in confirmation with Cl. no 8.1 of IRC SP: 51-2015.
CONCLUSION
Stnroture load test is a part of the contract to be performed as per Schedule I of the Concession
agreement.
The structure is tested for defleetion, under calculated loads for safety and serviceability
aspect. The deflectious of the structure are well within the provisions of IRC SP: 51-2015 and
the deflectious are less than the estimated theoretical value of deflection. No visible cracks
were observed under the load at any stage. Observed average recovery values are also
satisfying the code requirements.
ACKNOTWLEDGEMHNTS:
