(b) Let X represent the number of products inspected in a factory, until first defective item [6
is found. It is given that the probability of finding a defective item is p.
(i)What is the probability that the first defective item will occur in the 15th trial.
given that the first 10trials have been found to be free of defective?
(ii) Verify the result found in (i) using memoryless property.
Q.8. (a) The length of human pregnancies from conception to birth approximates a normal
distribution with a mean of 266 days and a standard deviation of 16 days.
(i) What proportion of all pregnancies will last between 240and 270 days?
(ü)What length of time marks the shortest 70% of all pregnancies?
(b) X is anormal random variable with zero mean and unknown variance. It is known that 6)
P(|X|<10) = 0.1. Find the standard deviation of X.
Q.9. (a) Let X, Y,Z represent the loss incurred by an insurance company in the three states 6
Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, respectively. Also given that the losses are inde
pendent. The Moment Generating Functions of X, Y, Z are given, respectively by
Mx(t) = (1 - 21)-3
My(t) = (1 21)-25
Mz(t) = (1- 2t)-4.5
Let S represent the combined loss from these three states. Calculate E(S).
(b) 1f Y~ Uniform(0, 1), find E[Y] using My(s). (6]
