The introduction of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) on the University of Mauritius

(UoM) campus offers a valuable opportunity to improve safety and mobility for at-risk road
users. By focusing on essential metrics such as the walkability index, pedestrian level of
service (PLOS), and components from walking checklists, ITS has the potential to convert
high-risk zones into safer and more accessible environments.

The application of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is intended to enhance the

Walkability Index, which gauges the campus's pedestrian accessibility. By scrutinizing foot
traffic dynamics and connectivity, ITS can advance walkability through the introduction of
smart crosswalks, dynamic traffic signals, and real-time alerts at essential points such as the
Main Entrance and Library Junction. This approach will lower the risks faced by pedestrians,
ensuring safer crossings at intersections where pedestrian and vehicle routes overlap.

The Pedestrian Level of Service (PLOS) evaluates the effectiveness and safety of pedestrian
facilities. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) solutions, including automated pedestrian
signals and alert systems, will give precedence to foot traffic at heavily trafficked
intersections, thereby enhancing safety and decreasing wait times, particularly during peak
periods. These initiatives will contribute to improved PLOS ratings by reducing conflicts
between pedestrians and vehicles. Furthermore, a Walking Checklist will pinpoint
deficiencies in pedestrian infrastructure, such as inadequate visibility or a lack of crossings at
critical locations like the Library or Gymnasium Junction. This assessment will inform the
implementation of ITS solutions, including countdown signals, enhanced lighting, and traffic-
calming strategies in areas with the greatest need.

In summary, the thoughtful application of ITS on the University of Mauritius campus will
markedly improve safety and mobility for vulnerable road users. By catering to the unique
requirements of each intersection, the campus has the potential to serve as a benchmark for
intelligent, secure, and pedestrian-centric transportation systems, thereby enriching the
experience for students, staff, and visitors
