1. Thesis title, Thesis title is clear and concise. Cover page is provided,
abstract and which includes the thesis title, your name and email
structure (10%) address, school name, degree for which you are a
candidate, names of lead supervisor and supervisor(s), and
date. Students intending to pursue a thesis with creative
work must state this on the cover page.
The proposal abstract (300–500 words) is clearly
structured, with research aim(s), research problem(s),
methodology, expected findings and contributions concisely
summarised.
Keywords (4–8 words or phrases) identify the topics that
your proposal covers accurately and effectively.
The proposal is well structured with key required elements
included (introduction, literature review, methodology,
feasibility, research timeline, bibliography etc.).
Table of contents list all headings with page numbers
provided.
2. Introduction Introduction sets the context for the proposed project, with
(10%) research aim and problem clearly stated at the start;
background is well explained to the general audience; the
line of argumentation is clear and convincing; the scope
and delimitations of the research are well defined and
appropriate to solutions of the problem.
3. Literature Literature review places the proposed research clearly in its
review (10%) relevant context, demonstrating your capacity of evaluating

relevant research; the major lines of criticism, omissions or
gaps in relevant research are clearly identified; research
questions are derived from the literature review by using
critical judgement and proper argumentation.
4. Significance The significance of the research is well justified.

The originality of the research is well argued, demonstrating

one (or several) of the following:
1) that the proposed project will produce new
knowledge that we do not already know;
2) that the proposed project will support, improve or
disprove a concept, model or theory; or
3) that the proposed project will contribute to new or
improved methodology, analysis or solution.
5. Research Objectives and research questions are clearly stated;
design and theoretical framework and approach are appropriate for the
methodology solution of the problem; if applicable, hypotheses or
(10%) research questions are testable or answerable, and
independent and dependent variables are identified.
Data collection methods and procedures are described in
detail and properly justified (e.g., the selection of data
collection methods, size and procedures of sampling,
setting and participants, controlling of variables, selection of
case studies, data sources, archives for archival research
etc.)
Data processing and analysis methods and techniques are
clearly described and properly justified. Information on
validity or triangulation strategies is provided.
Data management strategies are stated, with specific plans
including but not limited to storage, access and re-use
arrangements.
Limitations of the study are properly acknowledged.
Results of the preliminary research or pilot study (if
available) are discussed.

6. Feasibility and Feasibility in terms of availability of data access, relevant
research timeline expertise in the School, funding, equipment and technical
(10%) support is justified; potential challenges and strategies to
overcome them (if applicable) are discussed.
Research timeline lists the stages of your project (often in a
table format), indicating when you will start and finish
specific research tasks, complete draft chapters, submit
thesis for reviewing, and disseminate research outcomes
through presentations and publications.
7. Quality of Accurate and consistent referencing throughout; all
referencing and publications cited in your proposal are listed; inadvertent
bibliography plagiarism is avoided by citing sources each time when
(10%) discussing an idea that is not you own.

Recommendation on probation:
(1) the student’s candidature be confirmed
(2) the student be asked to submit a revised research proposal for the Panel’s evaluation within three months, based on which the Panel will make a
new recommendation
(3) the student’s candidature be discontinued

If the student has requested to transfer from the MPhil to PhD program, and received Probation Recommendation (3), the transfer request is not
supported. If the student has received Probation Recommendation (1) or (2), please make one of the following recommendations based on the criteria
listed in the attached Probation Evaluation Sheet:
(1) the student’s transfer request be supported, and the thesis topic is suitable for a PhD;
(2) the student’s transfer request be supported, but the thesis topic is not suitable for a PhD; the student be asked to submit a revised research
proposal for the Panel’s evaluation within three months, based on which the Panel will make a new recommendation; or
(3) the student’s transfer request not be supported.

If the thesis with creative work is proposed, please make one of the following recommendations:
(1) the proposed submission requirements be approved
(2) the student and supervisor be asked to submit revised submission requirements for the Panel’s evaluation within a month, based on which the
Panel will make a new recommendation
