PROGRAM 1
SOLUTION –
In this demonstration, we will explore the basic components of a computer system divided into
four categories:
1. ..Input Devices..
2. ..Output Devices..
3. ..Processing Devices..
4. ..Memory Devices..
Input devices are hardware components that allow users to send data or commands to a
computer. They convert human-readable data into machine-readable signals.
- ..Function..: The ..keyboard.. is one of the most common input devices used to type text and
commands into a computer.
- ..Parts..: It consists of various keys like letters, numbers, function keys, and special keys like
..Ctrl.., ..Alt.., and ..Shift...
- ..Usage..: It allows users to input text, numbers, and execute commands by pressing keys.
..Example..:
..b. Mouse..
- ..Function..: The ..mouse.. is a pointing device that moves a cursor on the screen. It typically
has two buttons (..left-click.., ..right-click..) and a ..scroll wheel...
- ..Parts..:
- ..Usage..: The mouse is used to interact with graphical elements on the screen, such as icons,
menus, and windows.
..Example..:
..c. Scanner..
- ..Function..: A ..scanner.. is used to convert physical documents (images, texts, etc.) into digital
format.
- ..Parts..: A ..scanner.. has a ..glass plate.. on which the document is placed, and a scanning
head that reads the document.
- ..Usage..: It's typically used for scanning images, documents, and photos to convert them into
a format that can be processed by the computer.
..Example..:
Output devices are hardware components that allow the computer to convey processed data to
the user in a readable or usable format.
..a. Monitor..
- ..Function..: The ..monitor.. is the primary output device used to display text, images, videos,
and other graphical elements from the computer.
- ..Types..:
- ..CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)..: Older technology, bulky, less energy-efficient.
- ..LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)..: Slimmer, energy-efficient, and commonly used in modern
computers.
- ..LED (Light Emitting Diode)..: A more advanced version of LCD with better color quality and
energy efficiency.
- ..Usage..: Used to view all content on the computer, from operating systems to applications
and websites.
..Example..:
..b. Printer..
- ..Types..:
..Example..:
..c. Speakers..
- ..Function..: ..Speakers.. are output devices that produce sound. They convert digital audio
signals into sound waves that can be heard by the user.
- ..Usage..: Used for playing music, system alerts, video sound, and other audio content.
..Example..:
- Listening to music on your computer or hearing system sounds like notifications or alarms.
Processing devices are components that interpret and manipulate the data provided by input
devices and convert it into useful output.
..a. Motherboard..
- ..Function..: The ..motherboard.. is the main circuit board of the computer. It connects all the
internal components, such as the CPU, RAM, and storage devices, and allows communication
between them.
- ..Parts..:
- ..Ports and Slots..: For connecting input/output devices (USB, HDMI, etc.).
..Example..:
- The motherboard serves as the backbone that interconnects all the other devices in a
computer system.
- ..Function..: The ..microprocessor.., often referred to as the ..CPU.. (Central Processing Unit), is
the brain of the computer. It performs most of the processing inside the system, executing
instructions from programs.
- ..Parts..:
- ..ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit)..: Performs mathematical calculations and logical operations.
- ..Usage..: The CPU executes program instructions, making decisions based on input data and
providing output to various devices.
..Example..:
Memory devices are used to store data and instructions needed for processing, as well as to
store data for later retrieval.
- ..Function..: ..RAM.. is volatile memory used to store data that is currently being processed by
the CPU.
- ..Usage..: It temporarily holds the data of open programs and active tasks. When the
computer is powered off, the data in RAM is lost.
..Example..:
- Running a browser, where all active tabs and open applications are stored in RAM.
- ..Function..: ..ROM.. is non-volatile memory used to store essential instructions needed for
booting up the computer, such as the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System).
- ..Usage..: ROM retains its contents even when the computer is powered off and contains
firmware that is critical for starting the computer.
..Example..:
- Booting the computer, as the ROM provides the instructions to initialize the hardware and
load the operating system.
- ..Function..: The ..HDD.. is a permanent storage device used to store the operating system,
programs, and personal data.
- ..Parts..:
- ..Read/Write Heads..: These read data from or write data to the platters.
- ..Usage..: It is the primary long-term storage device in most computers, with larger capacity
compared to other devices like SSDs (Solid State Drives).
..Example..:
- ..Function..: A ..DVD.. is an optical storage medium used for storing data, video, and other
large files.
- ..Parts..:
- ..Usage..: DVDs are often used for media distribution (e.g., movies or software installation)
and data backup.
..Example..:

The ..Desktop.., ..Taskbar.., and ..Start Menu.. are fundamental components of most graphical
user interfaces (GUIs) in operating systems like ..Windows... Let's break down each of these
components:
---
The ..Desktop.. is the main screen you see after logging into your computer. It serves as the
workspace where you can access files, programs, and shortcuts.
- ..Icons..: You will find icons on the desktop representing programs, files, and folders. These
icons act as shortcuts that you can double-click to open the associated program or file.
- ..Wallpaper..: The background image that appears on the desktop can be customized (e.g., a
photo or a design).
- ..Recycle Bin..: A special icon where deleted files are temporarily stored until you decide to
permanently delete them.
---
The ..Taskbar.. is a horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen in ..Windows.. and is essential for
navigation. It contains several key components:
- ..Start Button..: On the left side of the taskbar, the ..Start button.. opens the ..Start Menu...
- ..Pinned Applications..: These are the programs you frequently use and have pinned for easy
access. You can add programs here by right-clicking on their icon and selecting ..Pin to
Taskbar...
- ..Running Applications..: In the middle of the taskbar, you’ll see icons for applications that are
currently open. You can click on these icons to switch between open programs.
- ..System Tray..: Located on the far-right of the taskbar, the system tray shows status icons for
things like your network connection, battery, and system notifications.
---
The ..Start Menu.. is accessed by clicking the ..Start button.. on the taskbar (usually in the
bottom-left corner).
---
..Navigating Files and Folders, Understanding Different Views, and Managing Files..
In Windows, managing files and folders is done primarily through ..File Explorer... Here's an
overview:
---
- ..Open File Explorer..: Press ..Windows + E.. or click the ..File Explorer icon.. (a folder icon) on
the taskbar or in the Start Menu.
- ..Navigating..: On the left side, you'll see a ..navigation pane.. that includes:
- ..Quick Access..: Shortcuts to frequently used folders (e.g., Documents, Pictures, Downloads).
- ..This PC..: Displays the drives on your computer (like C:\, D:\, etc.) and other storage devices.
- ..Network..: Shows other computers or devices connected to your local network.
- ..Breadcrumb Navigation..: At the top of the File Explorer window, you’ll see a breadcrumb
trail (e.g., ..This PC > Documents > My Folder..) that helps you understand your current location
in the folder structure.
..Actions..:
- ..Click.. on folders to open them.
- ..Back Arrow..: Click the back arrow at the top left to go to the previous location.
- ..Forward Arrow..: Go forward if you navigated backward.
You can change the ..view.. in File Explorer to display files and folders in different ways. This
helps you navigate large collections of files more efficiently.
- ..Icon View..: Displays files as icons (small, medium, large, or extra-large icons).
- ..List View..: Lists files with their names.
- ..Details View..: Shows detailed information like name, date modified, file type, and size in
columns.
- ..Tile View..: Displays a preview of files in the form of tiles.
..File Management.. involves organizing, moving, renaming, copying, and deleting files. Here are
common tasks:
