1. A 6-pole, 148 A, D.C. shunt generator has 480 conductors and is wave wound. The field
current is 2 A. Find the demagnetizing and cross-magnetizing ampere-turns per pole at full
load if: (a) brushes are on GNA, (b) brushes are shifted from GNA by 50 electrical (c)brushes
are shifted from GNA by 50 mechanical [(a) De ATs/Pole = 0, Cross ATs/pole = 3000, (b)
166.67, 2833.33 (c) 500, 2500]
2. A 250 kW, 400 V, 6-pole D.C. generator has 720 lap wound conductors. It is given a brush
lead of 2.5 angular degrees (Mech.) from the GNA. Calculate the cross and demagnetizing
Ampere-turns per pole. Neglect the shunt field current. [Cross: 5731 ATs/pole, De: 521
ATs/pole]
3. A commutator with a diameter of 50cm rotates at 1000 rpm. For a brush width of 1.5 cm,
find the time of commutation. [0.573 ms]
4. The following O.C. test data was recorded for a separately excited dc generator.
The field resistance is adjusted to 50Ω and the terminal is 300V on load. Armature
resistance is 0.1 Ω and assuming that the flux is reduced by 5% due to armature reaction,
find the load supplied by the generator. [21.6 kW]
6. A shunt generator has field resistance of 60Ω. When the generator delivers 60 kW the
terminal voltage is 120 volts, while the generated EMF is 135 volts. Determine
(a) The armature circuit resistance
(b) The generated EMF when the output is 20 kW and the terminal voltage is 135 volts.
[0.03 Ω, 139.51 volts]
7. A 250 V, 10 kW DC shunt generator has 1400 turns on each pole. At rated speed, a shunt
field current of 2 A produces a no-load voltage of 250 V, but at rated load the same voltage
of 250 V can be produced by a field current of 2.2 A. It is required, not to change the field
current to maintain load voltage constant, but add a series field winding. Calculate the
number of series field turns per pole required for long shunt connection. [7 turns]
8. A 10 kW, 250 V DC shunt generator has total no-load rotational losses of 400 Watts. The
armature circuit (including brushes) and shunt field resistances are 0.5 Ohms and 250
Ohms respectively. Calculate the shaft power input and the efficiency at rated load. Also
calculate the maximum efficiency and the corresponding power output.
