AF101 – Introduction to Accounting and Financial Management

Major Assignment- Semester 1, 2025


Weighting: This GROUP assignment is marked out of 70 marks and is worth
10% of your coursework assessment.

Due date: FRIDAY ,9th MAY,2025 11.00 pm (FJ TIME) ONLINE

Instructions:
1. Laucala campus students note this is a group assignment with 3-
5 individuals per group from within your respective tutorials.
Note ONE submission per group.

2. Students outside of Laucala campus can form groups of 3-4


students as well if you wish to, one submission per group.
Individual assignments also accepted for campuses with less
than five registered students. For group work, students are
encouraged to collaborate via online mediums., google drive

3. Please submit on all assignments on moodle assignment dropbox by


9th May, 2025, 11.00pm (FIJI TIME).

4. Your assignment MUST be word processed and not PDF.


Handwritten assignments will NOT be accepted.

5. Ensure that your names and student ID No. are stated clearly on
the cover page, which can be downloaded from Moodle. If group
only one submission per group with all members’ details to be
included.

6. A penalty of 10% will be deducted each day or part thereof that the
assignment is late. Check late assignment policy.

7. Use APA style of referencing. Ensure to use proper in text


referencing, footnotes and generate a proper bibliography.
Plagiarized/copied assignments will be awarded a ZERO (0) mark.

8. Font size of 12 should be used with single line spacing.

9. All assignments will have to be submitted into TURN-IT-IN on

COMPANY FINANCIAL STATEMENT ANALYSIS

The South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPX) is the only licensed securities exchange in Fiji and
currently lists 20 public companies which have published their 2023 Annual Reports.

For this assignment, you will need to select ONE company (sign up on Moodle) that
has published its 2023 Annual Report and answer the following guiding questions
below in a report format.
Make sure to pick from the list of annual reports provided on Moodle signup. Any
company for the assignment chosen outside the five will not be graded.

1 Decision making & Role of Acctg


Refer to your chosen entity and: - Describe the main activities and operation of the entity; - List
any important Investment or Financial decisions made by the entity during the year; -
summarise what the Director are declaring in relation to an Accounting Assumption or to the
information in the financial statement.
Examine the Independent Auditor report for the year and - Identify the entity's audit firm; -
identify money received from the Company in relation to audit and non-audit work (if any); -
specify what the auditors state in relation to their independence.

2 Regulations & CFW


There would be a number of main users dependent on the annual reporting for decision making.
Identify two main users of the financial report and what types of decisions would they make
based on the information contained in the report?
Does your company use the historical cost system or some other method of valuing assets? Is
there any evidence that the company has revalued any of its assets in the past 12 months?

3 Cash
How is 'cash' define in the financial statements?
Did the total cash held by the company increase or decrease over the period? By how much?
Is there any reference in the report to aspects of internal control used by the company? If it has,
identify. If not, provide two measures of internal control for the company.
Does the company have an internal audit department? If it has, what are the major functions of
such a department?
Cash is referred to as the 'lifeblood' of an entity for its importance, in reference to your chosen
entity and using the appropriate cash sufficiency ratio, assessing and discuss its ability to
generate sufficient operating cash flows in order to cover its main cash requirements.
4 Receivables/Inventories
Have the receivables (Trade and/or other-current) of the company increased or decreased over
the year? By how much? Is the figure at the end of the year gross or net receivable? What was
the balance of the allowance (provision) for doubtful debts (allowance for impairment of
receivables) on the same date?
Calculate the receivable turnover. Has the turnover changed over the 12-month period? Discuss

Compare current asset and current liabilities as showing in the statement of financial position
and comment on the short-term solvency of the company.

Is there any reference in the report to aspects of internal control used by the company? If it has,
identify. If not, provide two measures of internal control for the company.

Determine the accounting policies used by the company for the valuation of inventories. Briefly
outline the features of the system used.
5 PPE
What was the composition of the company's property, plant and equipment at the end of the
reporting period? How have these assets been valued?
What methods of depreciation have been used for the various categories of property, plant and
equipment?
Has the organization disclosed the rate of depreciation or the useful lives of these assets? If so,
provide evidence of such.
What was the amount of depreciation charged on these assets for the current and prior years?
Were any items of property, plant and equipment derecognized during the year? If so, how has
the entity disclosed any gains or losses made on de-recognition of such assets. Provide details of
any financial amounts involved?
Calculate the return on assets for your chosen entity as the product of the profit margin and
asset turnover ratio. Provide an explanation among the ratios in application to your ROA
calculated.
6 Liabilities
Research reveals that typical ratios in the industry for the current and quick ratios are 1.5:1 and
1.0:1 respectively. For financial stability ratios, industry averages are 2:1 for the capitalization
ratio and 60% for the debt ratio.
Calculate the appropriate liquidity and financial stability ratios for the years 2022 and 2021.
Comment on the liquidity and stability of the company.

7 Opinion
From your analysis above has any economic event; locally, regionally or globally, had any impact
on your chosen entity and what would be your advice to a prospective investor who is
interested in investing in the company?

You must have seven sections in the assignment to follow the guided questions above.

Note: Your assignment will be submitted in Turn-it-in and similarity index should be less
than 20%. Those with a higher similarity index will warrant deduction of marks and zero
marks awarded to students who have copied past or present student assignments.

‘in-text’ referencing i.e. Author Date e.g. (Jones, 2009).

3. Bibliography must be generated using APA referencing style listing ALL your
reference sources.

4. Students need to pick out only 4 appropriate sources (e.g. book chapter, journal
article, official publication, etc.) that you will use in compiling this research report.

5. Check your assignment for possible plagiarism. Upload your draft assignment using
AF101 Major Assignment Dropbox – located under the assignment block of the
AF101 Moodle Page. Use the plagiarism report provided by TurnItIn to make
necessary changes to your assignment. The final version of your assignment must
have a Similarity Index of less than or equal to 20%. When checking your assignment
for plagiarism, you can exclude the following: quotes, bibliography and common
word matches of 100.

7. For Group work: students can meet online (using various technologies available)
and use google drive to share your assignment document amongst your group
members so each member can update assignment simultaneously.

Note: You may need to upload your assignment a number of times and check for the
Similarity Index. Once you receive the plagiarism report and have to make changes, delete
the previous assignment draft before uploading the modified version. Keep on uploading
and modifying before the due date until you are able to achieve an Index of less than or equal
to 20%. However, if students from the same group are uploading the same assignment it will
pick this up and increase the percentage.
