Iago is a conniving villain who manipulates Othello into thinking that his wife,
Desdemona is having an affair with Michael Cassio, Othello’s lieutenant. Iago is the
reason why all the important people in the play are killed. In the play there is a biblical
reference where Iago says “I am not what I am” refers to Satan as Jesus says in the
bible “I am that I am”. Iago resents Othello as Othello overlooked Iago and chose
Cassio, a less experienced worker, to be his lieutenant. This is why Iago planned his
plot to destroy the relationship between Othello and Desdemona. He also brings
Roderigo into the plan as he is a suitor for Desdemona and he loves Desdemona a lot.
For this reason, he also resents Othello. Iago treats Roderigo as a friendly with his tone
but eventually kills him too. Iago sees Cassio and Desdemona holding hands and this is
where he takes his chance to seek revenge even though they were only holding hands
in a friendly way. Iago found a handkerchief that was very important to Othello and
Desdemona’s relationship. He takes the handkerchief and plants it in Cassio’s bedroom.
Even before this he was planting ideas into Othello’s head about how close the
relationship between Cassio and Desdemona was. When Othello sees this ocular proof
and strangles Desdemona in the bed. But when Emilia, Iago’s wife, tells him that she
was faithful, Othello ends up killing himself because of how jealous he was. After
Othello dies Iago kills his wife for telling Othello the truth. After that, Iago also brings up
a fight between Roderigo and Cassio where Cassio stabs Roderigo but not fatally. Iago
sees Roderigo stabbed and finishes him off.
