How they were The king of Spain
transformed was a great distance
from his empire in the
Americas. He needed
loyal leaders to run
his colonies.
Peninsulares were
Spanish elites in the
Americas who would
return to Spain after
their assignment.
Because of this, they
were trusted the most
to manage the
colonies in America.
Creoles were also
Spanish elites but
they had made the
Americas their home
so they were not
given as much
authority. As these
spaniards married
native americas, and
new class system
emerged based on
race. Regardless, the
building of the
Spanish empire led to
a new social structure
in the Americas and
new elites such as
peninsulares and
creoles.
