Abraham
Abraham
1. Introduction
1. Where and When Was Abraham Born?
Abraham (originally Abram) was born around 2000–1800 BC in Ur of the Chaldeans,
an ancient city in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq).
He was born into a family that worshipped multiple gods, but God later called him to
follow the one true God (Yahweh).
2. Abraham’s Family Background (Genesis 11:26-32)
Father: Terah (a descendant of Shem, Noah’s son).
Brothers: Nahor and Haran (Haran was the father of Lot).
Wife: Sarai (later renamed Sarah).
Relocation: His family moved from Ur to Haran, where they settled for a time before
God called Abraham to Canaan.
3. Abraham’s Early Life and Religious Background
Ur was a wealthy and advanced city, known for worshipping the moon god Nanna (Sin).
Abraham likely grew up in a polytheistic culture before encountering the one true God.
Joshua 24:2 mentions that Abraham’s ancestors worshipped other gods before God
called him.
4. The Call of Abraham (Genesis 12:1-4)
Around the age of 75, God called Abraham to leave his homeland and go to Canaan,
promising to make him a great nation.
Abraham obeyed, beginning his journey of faith and trust in God.
