Chapter 3 Examples of Tenses

Present Tense
A. Simple present tense
1. Using Verb-I. Example : (+) He speaks English (-) He does not speaks English (?) Does he speaks English ? (-?) Does he not speaks English ? 2. Using be (is, am, are). Example : (+) He is a teacher (-) He is not a teacher (?) He is a teacher ? (-?) Is he not a teacher ? 3. States habitual actions. Example : I always come on time. Ali goes to school everyday The sun rises in the east. A weak has seven days.

B. Present Continuous Tense


1. Using Verb-ing. Example : (+) Lucy is watching television. (-) Lucy is not watching television.

(?) Is Lucy watching television ? (-?) Is Lucy not watching television ? 2. Using Be (is, am, are). Example : (+) She is happy. (-) She is not happy (?) Is she happy ? (-?) Is she not happy ? 3. States an action that happen now. Example : - I am studying English now. - He is writing a letter. 4. States a temporary activities . Example : - John is writing a letter now but he will play football. 5. States planned activity and will be done immediately. Example : - I am listening to Sigma Radio tonight. - Lukman is writing a letter again a few weeks. 6. States an event or action that is ongoing during speaking. Example : - I am doing my homework now. - She is studying at the library now.

C. Present Perfect Tense


1. Using verb III. Example : (+) She has read a magazine. (-) She has not read a magazine. (?) Has She read a magazine ? (-?) Has She not read a magazine ? 2. Using Been. Example : (+) You have been a teacher. (-) You have not been a teacher. (?) Have you been a teacher ? (-?) Have you not been a teacher ? 3. States an activity undertaken in the past and still have something to do with the present. Example : - I have lived here for two years. - Herman has got married since 2009. 4. states an event that has been made repeatedly. Example : - They have visited Borobudur Temple three times. 5. Used to states an event that has occured. Example : - She has seen it. - They have just returned from school.

D. Present Perfect Continuous Tense


1. Using verb-ing. Example : (+) Ali has been finishing his homework. (-) Ali has not been finishing his homework. (?) Has Ali been finishing his homework ? (-?) Has Ali not been finishing his homework ? 2. Using Been. Example : (+) She has been at home. (-) She has not been at home. (?) Has She been at home ? (-?) Has She not been at home ? 3. States an activity that already begun long enough in the past and still continues till this day. Example : - I have been learning English since 2006 - We have been watching television for two hours.

Past Tense
A. Simple past Tense
1. Using verb-III. Example : (+) John watched television last night. (-) John did not watched television last night. (?) Did John watch television last night ? (-?) Did John not watch television last night ?

Using Be (was,were). Example : (+) He was very busy yesterday. (-) He was not very busy yesterday. (?) Was he very busy yesterday ? (-?) was he not very busy yesterday ?

States an activity that occurred in the past. Example : - I visited Bali six months ago. - I met him two hours ago.

4.

States an habit that done in the past. Example : - We used to have three rabbits. - Siska alays read the bible at night.

B. Past Continuous Tense


1. Using verb-ing. Example: (+) Rani was studying English yesterday night. (-) Rani was not studying English yesterday night. (?) Was Rani studying English yesterday night ? (-?) Was Rani not studying English yesterday night ? 2. Using Be (was,were). Example: (+) Charles was happy. (-) Charles was not happy. (?) Was Charles happy ? (-?) Was Charles not happy?

3. States an ongoing activity at the time that stopped in the past. Example : - Charles was calling his honey yesterday at nine oclock. - Siska was received the letter of love from his honey at seven oclock. 4. States an action in progress when following or any other event happened in the past. Example : - Gunawan was watching television when his father come. - Ron was going to school when he meet Nova. 5. States an ongoing events as well as other events that happening simultaneously in the past. Example : - I were reading the book while my mother drinking a cup of tea. - Max was drinking a bottle of milk when his mother was coming.

C. Past Perfect Tense


1. Using verb-III. Example: (+) I had forgotten my homework. (-) I had not forgotten my homework. (?) Had I forgotten my homework ? (-?) Had I not forgotten my homework ? 2. Using Been. Example: (+) Jean had been a doctor. (-) Jean had not been a doctor. (?) Had Jean been a doctor ? (-?) Had Jean not been a doctor ?

3. States an activity that has occurred in the past before another activity happened in the past. First event using Past Perfect Tense and the other event using Past Tense. Example : - She had been lunch before she went home. - After Charles hard studied, he helped his mother. 4. States an event or events that have occurred before a certain time in the past (activities completed before an other time in the past). Example : - John has arrived at the office before eight oclock

D. Past Perfect Continuous Tense


1. Using verb-ing. Example: (+) They had been playing football. (-) They had not been playing football. (?) Had They been playing football ? (-?) Had They not been playing football ? 2. Using Been. Example: (+) David had been a doctor. (-) David had not been a doctor. (?) Had David been a doctor ? (-?) Had David not been a doctor ? 3. States an activity or activities that has occurred and is still going on in the past and was completed before another activity happened in the past. First event using Past Perfect Continuous Tense and the other event using simple Past Tense . Example : - I had been playing football for two hours before he came.

4. States an ongoing activity in the past. Example : - I were very tired because I had been doing my English exercise.

Future Tense
A. Simple Future Tense
1. Using verb-I. Example: (+) We shall watch television. (-) We shall not watch television. (?) Shall we watch television ? (-?)Shall we not watch television? 2. Using Be. Example: (+) You will be happy. (-) You will not be happy. (?) Will you be happy ? (-?) Will you not be happy ? 3. States any act or activity or activities to be conducted in the future. Example : - My brother will send the letter tomorrow. - I shall go to cilacap next week.

4. States the activities or conduct that would be done if requirements are met (conditional sentence type 1). Example : - Agus will go home if his parents call him. 5. States a request.

Example : - Will you help me ? - Will you open the door ? 6. States a promise that will happen. Example : - I shall meet you by nine. 7. States a prediction. Example : - It will be rainy today. B. Future Continuous Tense 1. Using verb-Ing. Example: (+) My mother will be learning English. (-) My mother will not be learning English. (?) Will My mother be learning English ? (-?)Will My mother not be learning English ? 2. Using Be Example: (+) He will be at home. (-) He will not be at home. (?) Will He be at home ? (-?)Will He not be at home ? 3. States an activity or actions that will be taking place at a certain time in the future. Example : - My friends will be coming tomorrow.

C. Future Perfect Tense


1. Using verb-III.

Example: (+) You will have made a cake. (-) You will not have made a cake. (?) Will You have made a cake ? (-?)Will You not have made a cake ? 2. Using Been Example: (+) She will have been a writer. (-) She will not have been a writer. (?) Will She have been a writer ? (-?)Will She not have been a writer ? 3. States an activity or activities that has already begun and will be completed in the future. Example : - They will have married by the end of this month.

D. Future Perfect Continuous Tense


1. Using verb-Ing. Example: (+) We shall have been studying English. (-) We shall not have been studying English. (?) Shall We have been studying English ? (-?)Shall We not have been studying English ? 2. Using Been. Example: (+) He will have been happy. (-) He will not have been happy. (?) Will he have been happy?

(-?)Will he not have been happy? 3. States an activity or activities that would have been done and is still ongoing at the time that will come. Example : - You will have been studying English for three hours at that time.

Past Future Tense


A. Simple Past Future Tense
1. Using verb-I. Example: (+) She would visit her uncle the day before. (-) She would not visit her uncle the day before. (?) Would She visit her uncle the day before ? (-?)Would She not visit her uncle the day before ? 2. Using Be. Example: (+) Johan would be a photographer. (-) Johan would not be a photographer. (?) Would Johan be a photographer ? (-?)Would Johan not be a photographer ? 3. States an event or activities that will happened or be done in the past, but never realized because there are conditions that are not met. Example : - Ali would come here, if you invited him yesterday. - I should buy a car if I had much money. 4. States an event or activity that will already happened or done in the past. Example : - You would be in Jakarta last week.

B. Past Future Continuous Tense


1. Using verb-Ing. Example: (+) We would be speaking English. (-) We would not be speaking English. (?) Would We be speaking English ? (-?)Would We not be speaking English ? 2. Using Be. Example: (+) We would be happy the following day. (-) We would not be happy the following day. (?) Would We be happy the following day ? (-?)Would We not be happy the following day ? 3. States an action or activities that happened in past. Example : - They would be going to Medan at this time last month.

C. Past Future Perfcet Tense


1. Using verb-III. Example: (+) She would have learnt English. (-) She would not have learnt English. (?) Would She have learnt English ? (-?)Would She not have learnt English ? 2. Using Been. Example: (+) She would have been a mother. (-) She would not have been a mother.

(?) Would She have been a mother ? (-?)Would She not have been a mother ? 3. States an activity that would clears in the past, but failed for some reason. Example : - I should have bought a car if I had much money last week. D. Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense 1. Using verb-ing. Example : (+) She would have been speaking english. (-) She would not have been speaking english. (?) Would She have been speaking english? (-?)Would She not have been speaking english? 2. Using been. Example : (+) She would have been at home. (-) She would not have been at home. (?) Would She have been at home? (-?)Would She not have been at home? 3. States an activities that will be completed and still at progress in past. Example : - By last year, he would have been studying English for three months in pare.
