Seatwork:
1. Two metallic plates separated by 1 cm are connected across a 12V battery. A
certain plastic material is inserted filling the space between the plates and the
charge on each plate observed to be double. What is the dielectric constant of this
plastic?
2. Calculate the capacitance between the two parallel plates each of which is 100
cm2 and 2mm apart.
3. A capacitor has two parallel metal plates measuring 0.45 m square each. The
distance between the plate is 1 cm in free air. If a dielectric material whose
permittivity is 4 and 5 mm thick is placed in the upper plate, leaving an air gap
between the bottom plate and the dielectric, what is the capacitance of the
capacitor?
4. A capacitor is composed of two plates separated by a 3-mm insulation whose
dielectric constant is 4. An additional piece of 6-mm insulation is inserted between
the plates. What is the dielectric constant of the additional insulation if the
capacitance of the capacitor decreases to half as much of its original value?
5. A parallel-plate capacitor has an equivalent capacitance of 850 pF. The area of
each plate is 6 cm2 and the thickness of the dielectric is 0.02 cm. If the material
used as the dielectric has a constant of 8, how many sections are there in parallel?
6. A parallel plate capacitor is made of 350 plates, separated by paraffined paper
0.001 cm thick (k = 2.5). The effective size of the plate is 15 by 30 cm. What is
the capacitance of this capacitor?
7. A capacitor is charged with 0.23 watt-second of energy at a voltage of 48 volts.
What is the capacitance?
8. A 20 microfarad is charged by a 12-V battery. What is the stored energy in the
capacitor?
9. A parallel plate capacitor with air between its plate is charged until the
potential difference V appears across it. Another capacitor having hard rubber
(dielectric constant = 3) between its plate but otherwise identical, is also charged
to the same potential difference. If the of the capacitor is W, what is the ratio?
10. A capacitor whose plate is 20 cm by 3 cm and is separated by a 1 mm air gap is
connected across a 12-V battery. Determine the charge accumulated on each plate
after a long time.
11. Ther result of capacitance C1 = 6 microfarads and C2 connected in series is 3
microfarads. Capacitor C2, in microfarads is?
12. The equivalent capacitance of two capacitors in series is 0.03 microfarad and
when connected in parallel, 0.16 microfarad. If the capacitor with smaller
capacitance is replace with a capacitor whose capacitance is doubled as much that
will be the new equivalent series capacitance of the combination.
13. Three capacitors of 16,15 and 12 microfarad, respectively are connected in
series. What is the maximum voltage that can be supplied to the combination if the
voltage drop across any of three capacitors must not exceed 100V.
14. Three capacitors 20,10, and 15 microfarad respectively are connected in series
across, 100-V supply. Find the voltage across the 10 microfarad capacitor.
15. Three condensers of 6,10 and 15 microfarad are connected in series across a
200V supply. If the condenser are disconnected, how much energy can the charged
condensers provide if connected across each other with like polarities together?
16. Two capacitors with capacitance of 6 microfarad and 4 microfarads are connected
in series across a 100V DC source. If the supply voltage is cut-off and the two
capacitors are connected in parallel, what will be the final charge accumulated in
the 4 microfarad capacitor?
17. A 40 microfarad capacitor is charged to store 0.2 joule of energy. An uncharged
60 microfarad capacitor is connected in parallel with the first one through a
perfectly conducting leads. What is the energy lost due the work done by the charges
in spreading out over the two capacitors?
18. Four capacitors A,B,C and D are connected across a 150V DC source. The charges
accumulated in A,B, and C are equal to 2000, 750, and 1500 microcoloumbs,
respectively. If the total capacitance of the combination is known to be 35
microfarad, how much charge is the accumulated in capacitor D?
19. A condenser of 1 microfarad capacitance is charged to 100 volts and then
disconnected from the power supply. A second but uncharged capacitor of 3 microfarad
is then connected across the first capacitor. The voltage across the combination
is?
20. Three capacitors A,B, and C are charged as follows: A = 10 microfarad, 100V; B
= 15 microfarad, 150V and C = 25 microfarad, 200V. They are connected in parallel
with terminals of like polarity together. What is the voltage across the
combination?
21. A 100 microfarad capacitor is charged from a 200-V supply. The charge capacitor
is then connected across three uncharged capacitors connected in parallel. The
charge on these capacitors after a long time become 4000,5000, and 6000
microcoloumbs. Solve the voltage across the combination.
22. Two capacitors of 200 and 800 nF, respectively are connected in parallel. The
combination is then connected in series with another two capacitors of C and 600
nF connected in parallel. If the total capacitance of the set-up is 500 nF, determine
the capacitance C.
23. Coaxial cable has 10-mm diameter inside conductor and a metallic sheath with
an inside diameter of 20mm. If the insulating medium has a dielectric constant k =
2,and permittivity of 1.113 x 10-10, what is the capacitance between the conductor
and shield per km?

0.35 inch) surrounded by 0.20 inch wall of rubber insulation. Assuming the
dielectric constant of 4.3 for rubber, calculate the capacitance of the cable per
