ENVIRONMENTAL SENSITIVITY
1) In the recent years, digital innovation has played a role in environmental sensitivity. Lee and
Kim (2023) show that smart room technology such as automated lighting and climate control
that has significantly reduced energy consumption in modern hotels. Furthermore, data-driven
sustainability monitoring systems have allowed for real-time adjustments to optimize resource
use and reduce waste.

2) By the early 2020s, hotel sustainability initiatives were being influenced by consumer
preferences, as has been observed by Han and Hyun (2020). Guests were observed to be more
inclined to choose hotels with engaged environmental efforts. These hotels eliminated virtually
all single-use plastics, implemented a number of linen reuse programs, and offered several
plant-based dining options. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated this trend, pushing
hotels to rethink resource usage and waste management strategies.

3) Hotels not only consume large quantities of non-biodegradable products, but also generate
different kinds of solid and liquid wastes as well as gaseous emissions. The effect of the
operations of the hotel industry on the environment is said to contribute heavily to global
warming, depletion of the ozone layer, and destruction of the eco-system (Thao, 2017). This
raises serious environmental concerns from government agencies and various stakeholders
including hotel customers on the need for hotels to follow safe and sustainable practices to
preserve the environment and reduce the harmful effects of the operations on the environment.

4) Zhang et al. (2020) define green hotels as the type of hotels that largely embrace the three Rs
(reduce, reuse, recycle) and two Es (energy and efficiency) in their operation. Thus, green hotels
integrate sustainability variables such as energy efficiency, water conservation, usage of organic
food commodities, recycling of used materials, reuse of towels and bedsheets, waste
management, reduction in chemical and gas emissions, reduction in the use of plastic containers
and packages, and the use of sustainable building materials into their operations.

5) Ardiansyah and Chandra (2021) explain that green hotel management includes aspects of
environmentally friendly design and construction as well as daily operational practices that focus
on energy efficiency and emission reduction. This concept aims toward a healthier environment
for both of the staff and of the guests. Also, the concept supports sufficient environmental
sustainability. In totality, green hotels represent an important step forward when the hospitality
industry integrates sustainability into each and every aspect of its operations and thereby
chooses to be more environmentally friendly and responsible choice.
