CAT EXAM ROADMAP

CAT stands for Common Admission Test. It's a national-level computer-based


test conducted by one of the IIMs annually. This exam is the gateway to
prestigious management programs, primarily MBA courses, offered by IIMs
and other top business schools across India.

CAT assesses candidates' abilities in three main sections:

1. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC): Tests reading


comprehension, verbal reasoning, and critical reasoning skills.
2. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR): Evaluates data
interpretation, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
3. Quantitative Ability (QA): Assesses mathematical and numerical
reasoning abilities

● Meeting the minimum CAT cut off is mandatory for candidates to be


shortlisted for MBA admission.
● Candidates have to meet CAT sectional cut off too for selection to WAT-PI
round of MBA colleges.
● CAT cut offs for top IIMs usually range from 98 to 100 percentile for
General category students.
● For reserved category students the IIM cut offs are slightly lower around 95
to 98 percentile.
● The CAT cut offs for admission to top MBA colleges such as FMS, MDI,
SPJIMR among others, range from 90 to 99 percentile.
● There are two types of CAT cutoffs for IIM admission – qualifying cut off
and final cut off.
● Qualifying IIM CAT cut off is announced before CAT result declaration and

the final CAT cutoff is declared at the time of PI shortlisting.

● The IIMs do not release final CAT cut offs publicly. They are accessible
through account login to only those candidates who appear in the CAT
exam.
● Other institutes accepting CAT exam score for admission too, fix a

minimum cut off to shortlist candidates for admission.

● Candidates have to mention their choice of IIM and course in the CAT
application form for being shortlisted for WAT-PI.

Next 11 month plan for CAT Preparation:

January to March: Foundation Building

● Understand the Syllabus: Familiarize yourself with the detailed syllabus


for all three sections: VARC, DILR, and QA.
● Basic Concepts: Revise fundamental concepts in mathematics, English
grammar, and logical reasoning.
● Mock Test Analysis: Start taking mock tests to gauge your strengths and
weaknesses. Analyze your performance to identify areas requiring
improvement.
● Consistent Practice: Dedicate daily time for practice, focusing on
building strong fundamentals.

April to June: Intensive Practice

● Section-wise Practice: Practice each section regularly, focusing on time


management and accuracy.
● Diverse Question Types: Expose yourself to a variety of question types
within each section.
● Regular Mock Tests: Take mock tests every week to simulate exam
conditions and improve time management.
● In-depth Analysis: Analyze each mock test thoroughly, identifying areas
of improvement and learning from mistakes.

July to September: Advanced Level Preparation

● Advanced Level Questions: Practice difficult and complex questions


from previous year's papers and mock tests.
● Time Management: Focus on time management strategies, especially
for the DILR section.
● Regular Revisions: Revise concepts regularly to reinforce learning.
● Peer Discussions: Discuss doubts and strategies with fellow CAT
aspirants.

October and November: Final Preparation and Strategy

● Revision: Revise all concepts, formulas, and shortcuts.


● Mock Tests: Take as many mock tests as possible to fine-tune your
strategy.
● Analyze and Adapt: Analyze your performance in mock tests to identify
areas for improvement and adapt your strategy accordingly.
● Positive Mindset: Maintain a positive attitude and believe in your
abilities.
