Mendeley Web version and Mendeley Reference Manager desktop

There are two versions of Mendeley: Mendeley Reference Manager desktop (online and offline) and web
version. They are identical in look and functionality. Your library is automatically synced between the two
versions. Mendeley Reference Manager desktop can make your library available for use offline. Hover your
cursor over the sync. icon to see the last synchronization or select the icon to perform a manual
synchronization (when working offline) (see Fig2).

Different ways to import references

Fig3: Ways to import

1. Drag and drop PDFs from your computer into your Mendeley library to add the references.
Mendeley will automatically extract the details (=metadata) from the PDF.

2. Add file from your computer or add entry manually Use the “+Add new” function to select a
reference from your computer and add it to your Mendeley library. You can always add the details
of a reference manually. Use option “+Add new” - “Add entry manually”. You can use a DOI (Digital
Object Identifier) to look up details of a reference. This is basically a permanent internet address of
a publication, provided by a publisher, where you can find all the citation details of a published
material. You can use this information to complete the metadata form of those references you enter
manually (see Fig4)

3. Use Web Importer. See section “How to install Web Importer”. Fig7. Search in a database and
click on the Web Importer

4. Export from database. Export to RIS file via cite or export button in a database. See Fig6. In some
databases, there is a Mendeley button to export automatically (e.g., Scopus). You can also import a
BibTeX or RIS file by using Drag and Drop (see method 1) or Add file (see method 2).

Search in a database and click on cite. Save as

RIS and add this file in Mendeley

How to install the Web Importer
The Web Importer is a bookmark / extension on favorite toolbar of your internet browser that you can use
to import documents from any website where details of a document are mentioned. You can install the Web
Importer from https://www.mendeley.com/reference-management/web-importer or in Mendeley Reference
Manager desktop, option Tools. See Fig7. See also Fig5: “Use Web Importer” to learn how to use it.

Mendeley and Word (Mendeley cite)

While writing your Bachelor Final report in MS Word, you can install “Mendeley cite” to be able to “Cite
while you write”. Go to Tools – Install Mendeley cite for MS Word (Fig8). Mendeley Cite functionality will
appear to “References” tab of your MS Word window. See Fig9.

want to enter.
To create a reference list, please place the mouse pointer on the section you want to put the list of your
references, click button “More”, “insert bibliography”, also found in Mendeley cite, Fig10.

If you prefer to use LaTeX or Overleaf you need to fill the field “citation key”. Click on the reference in your
Mendeley library, the detail pane on the right side of the screen shows the fields (=metadata). Click on the
field “citation key” to fill this field. Fig11

To export the BibTeX from Mendeley library, select the reference and choose Export - BibTeX (*.bib).

Using BibTeX in LaTeX/Overleaf

- Determine \documentclass {…} and \usepackage{…}, if necessary.

- Enter in-text citation: ~\cite{citation key}

You can also link your Overleaf account to your Mendeley, import references from your Mendeley library
into Overleaf and keep those references synched. See for more information:
