Definition: A compound adjective is an adjective made up of two or more words, usually


connected with a hyphen, that describe a noun. Example: well-known actor, fast-moving train,
high-pitched voice.

Common Types of Compound Adjectives:

1. Number + Noun: a five-star hotel, a ten-minute break


2. Adverb + Past Participle: a well-known author, a brightly-lit room
3. Adverb + Present Participle: a fast-moving car, a never-ending story
4. Noun + Adjective: a world-famous chef, a snow-white dress
5. Noun + Present Participle: a time-saving technique, a heart-breaking story
6. Adjective + Noun: a full-length mirror, a deep-sea diver
7. Adjective + Past Participle: a short-lived victory, a narrow-minded person
