1. Solve the following equations using the quadratic formula, giving your answers correct to 1
decimal place.
a. x2 + 5x + 1 = 0 g. x2 + 10x = 4

x = -0.2, x = -4.8 x2 + 10x – 4 = 0

x = 0.4, x = -10.4
2
b. x – 4x – 7 = 0

x = 5.3, x = -1.3 h. 3x2 + 7x + 4 = 1

3x2 + 7x + 3 = 0
c. x2 – x – 11 = 0
x = -0.6, x = -1.8
x = 3.9, x = -2.9

i. 6x2 – 5x = 8
2
d. 4x + 8x – 96 = 0
6x2 – 5x – 8 = 0
x = 4.0, x = -6.0
x = 1.6, x = -0.8

e. 4x2 + 20x + 25 = 0
j. 4x2 + 2 = 7x
x = -2.5
4x2 – 7x + 2 = 0

f. 2x2 – x – 9 = 0 x = 1.4, x = 0.4

x = 2.4, x = -1.9

2. Solve the following equations using the quadratic formula, giving your answers correct to 2
decimal places.

a. 10x2 = -3x + 2 d. (x – 2)(x – 3) = 8

10x2 + 3x – 2 = 0 x2 – 5x + 6 = 8

x = 0.32, x = -0.62 x2 – 5x – 2 = 0

 x = -0.37, x = 5.37

b. x(x – 1) = x + 5 e. 3x + 5 = 5x2 + 2(x – 4)

x2 – x = x + 5 3x + 5 = 5x2 + 2x – 8

x2 – 2x – 5 = 0 5x2 – x – 13 = 0

x = 3.45, x = -1.45 x = 1.72, x = -1.52

c. x(2x + 3) = 4 – 7x

2x2 + 3x = 4 – 7x

2x2 + 10x – 4 = 0

x = 0.37, x = -5.37

3. A rectangle has a width of xm and a length 4. A rectangular field has a length 20m longer
of (2x + 5)m. If the area of the rectangle is than its width. The area of the field is
500m2, find the width and the length of the 2000m2. Calculate the width and the length
rectangle, correct to the nearest metre. of the field correct to the nearest metre.

x(2x + 5) = 500 x(x + 20) = 2000

2x2 + 5x = 500 x2 + 20x = 2000

2x2 + 5x – 500 = 0 x2 + 20x – 2000 = 0

x = 14.610721… x = 35.8257…

x = -17.1107… x = -55.8257…

width = 15m width = 36m

length = 2 × 14.610721… + 5 length = 35.8257… + 20

length = 34m length = 56m

2
× (x – 5) × (x – 8) = 30

1
2
× (x2 – 13x + 40) = 30

0.5x2 – 6.5x – 10 = 0

x = 14.389…

x = -1.389…

x = 14cm
