Lesson 10: Ex 1I – SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS USING SUBSTITUTION

Simultaneous equations are when there are two or more equations.

Often the aim is to find a solution to these, which is where the lines intersect.

When working with two linear equations, we can have three types of solutions:

________________________ ________________________ ________________________

We can solve simultaneous equations using the substitution method:

1. Label the equations.
2. Identify or transpose an equation to make one variable the subject (eg. 𝑥 =…).
3. Substitute that expression into the other equation.
4. Solve for the remaining variable.
5. Substitute that value back in to either equation to solve for the original variable.

Eg 1. Solve the following simultaneous equations using the substitution method:

a. 𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 1
3𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 29

Lesson 12: Ex 1K – FURTHER APPLICATIONS OF SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS

Generally, we will need to create equations from given information to apply simultaneous equations:

1. Define a variable for each unknown.

2. Write down equations that relate to the information.

3. Solve the equations by substitution or elimination

4. Interpret the solution by writing the answer in words/sentences

Eg 1. Ashley received better results for her Maths test than for her Science test. If the sum of the two
marks is 164 and the difference is 22, calculate the mark she received for each subject.

Eg 2. To finish a project, Gary buys some nuts and bolts from Bunnings, with 25 pieces in total. If each nut
costs 12 cents, each bolt costs 25 cents and the total purchase price is $4.30, how many nuts and how
 many bolts did Gary buy?

Eg 3. For a local music festival, they offer adult tickets for $25 and children’s tickets for $10. The security
at the entrance to the festival were counting people as they entered but did not take notice of whether
they were adults or children. If the total revenue from tickets was $1800 and security counted 87
