ENGINEERING PHYSICS - 1ST SEMESTER IMPORTANT TOPICS

1. Frame of Reference:

A coordinate system used to describe position and motion of objects.

2. Inertial Frame of Reference:

A frame at rest or moving with constant velocity; Newton's laws hold.

3. Non-Inertial Frame of Reference:

A frame that is accelerating; Newton's laws need fictitious forces.

4. Oscillation:

Repeated motion about an equilibrium point.

5. Harmonic Oscillator:

A system with restoring force proportional to displacement.

6. Forced Oscillator:

Oscillates due to external periodic force.

7. Resonance:

External frequency matches natural frequency, causing large amplitude.

8. Damped Harmonic Motion:

Oscillation with gradually decreasing amplitude due to friction.

9. Ohm's Law:
V = IR; current is proportional to voltage.

10. Faraday's Law:

Changing magnetic field induces emf in a circuit.

11. Lenz's Law:

Induced current opposes the change causing it.

12. Gauss's Law:

Electric flux through closed surface equals enclosed charge/epsilon_0.

13. Lorentz Force:

F = q(E + v × B); force on charge in fields.

14. Compton Effect:

Wavelength of X-rays increases after scattering off electrons.

15. Photoelectric Effect:

Emission of electrons when light hits a metal surface.

16. Electric Polarization:

Alignment of dipoles in dielectric under electric field.

17. Displacement Current:

Changing electric field creates current (Maxwell correction).

18. Laplace's Law:

Pressure difference across curved surface proportional to surface tension / radius.

19. Laplace's Equation:

Del squared phi = 0; holds in charge-free regions.

20. Combination of Resistance:

a. Series:

Same current, voltage divides. Total R = R1 + R2 + ...

b. Parallel:

Same voltage, current divides. 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + ...

c. Mixed:

Use step-by-step simplification.

Key Differences:

Feature | Series | Parallel

-----------|--------------|-----------------

Current | Same | Divides

Voltage | Divides | Same

Resistance | Adds up | Reciprocal formula
