tiny prism

12. Sumit covers a distance of 2.4 Km from his house to reach her college on a scooter. If the
scooter has a speed of 6m/sec, calculate the time taken by her to reach the college.
Solution: Total distance travelled = 2.4 km
= 2.4 × 1000 m
= 2400m.
Speed = 6m/sec
time = (Distance/speed)
= 2400/6
= 400 sec.

13. Mention the name and mode of reproduction in the following organisms.

14. How does sweat help keep you cool?

Solution: Sweating plays an important role in cooling the body by allowing water to
evaporate off the skin, resulting in a loss of body heat.
15. How does respiration occur in earthworms?

Solution: Earthworms breathe through their skins. The skin of an earthworm feels moist
and slimy on touching. Gases can easily pass through them.

16. Explain why rusting of iron objects is faster in coastal areas than in deserts.
Solution: Rusting of iron objects occurs if iron comes in contact with moist air. It is faster in
coastal areas than in deserts because air contains a high percentage of moisture in coastal
areas. In contrast, the air is dry and hot in the deserts. Therefore, rusting is more prominent
in coastal provinces than in deserts.
17. Look at the figure which shows solutions taken in test tubes A, B, C, and D. When a

18. The handle of a pressure cooker is covered with thick plastic. Explain why.
Solution:
As we know plastic is a bad conductor of heat due to which the heat from the cooker does
not flow to its handle and we can hold it easily.
So, this is the reason the handle of a pressure cooker is covered with thick plastic.

19 Write two uses of a concave mirror.

Solution: Concave mirrors are used for many purposes. Doctors use concave mirrors for
examining eyes, ears, nose, and throat. Concave mirrors are also used by dentists to see
an enlarged image of the teeth. The reflectors of torches, headlights of cars, and scooters
are concave in shape.

20. Differentiate uniform motion and non-uniform motion.

Solution: Objects that move in a straight line and maintain the same speed throughout the

23. State one function of the following:
● Arteries
● Veins
● Capillaries
Solution:
Arteries – Arteries carry blood from the heart to all parts of the body.
Veins – Veins carry blood from all parts of the body back to the heart.
Capillaries – Capillaries are the smallest of the body’s blood vessels. They carry oxygen
and other nutrients from the bloodstream to other tissues in the body; they also collect
carbon dioxide waste materials and fluids for return to the veins.

24. After we work hard or perform physical activity, we feel hungry. Explain why.
Solution:
When we work hard or perform physical activity (like running, swimming, cycling), we need
more energy. To fulfill the energy requirement, we breathe faster. Fast breathing helps in
the supply of more oxygen to our cells. Due to this, the rate of breakdown of food
increases, and more energy is released. The rapid breakdown of food makes us feel
hungrier.
25. At the campsite there are tents of two shades. One is made with black fabric and the
other with white fabric. Which one would you prefer for resting on a hot summer afternoon?
Give a reason for your choice. Would you like to prefer the same tent during winter?
Solution:
We will prefer a white fabric tent in case of summer because it reflects all the radiation from
the sun and keeps us cool inside the tent.
But in the ease of winter, we should not use white fabric tents, we should use black fabric
tents as it absorbs all colours of light from the sun and keeps us warm inside the tent.

= 40 x 2 = 80 Km
28. What is the dispersion of light? How it takes place? Draw a diagram to show the
dispersion of white light by a glass prism.
Solution
Dispersion of light is the phenomenon of splitting up of white light into seven colours on
passing through a transparent medium like a glass prism. Different colours of white light
have different speeds in the refracting medium, so they bend through different angles
inside the prism. The formation of a spectrum of seven colours indicates that white light is a
mixture of seven colours.

29. How does the process of fertilization take place in flowers? Explain the difference
between self-pollination and cross-pollination

Solution

When the pollen grain reaches the stigma of a same species flower, it starts
growing out into the pollen tube of the stigma. This tube continues to grow inside the style
till it reaches the ovule. Male cells are released into the ovule for fertilization with the female
egg cell and thus the zygote is formed. After this process of fertilization, the ovary develops
into fruit and ovules into seeds.

30. Give one function of each of the following organs,

(a) Blood vessels
(b) Kidney
(c) Blood platelets
(d) Heart

(e) Pulmonary artery.

Solution:
The main functions of the following organs are as follows:
(a) Blood vessels These run between the heart and the rest of the body. It helps in the
transport of blood between the heart and various organs of the body.
(b) The Kidney is called the filter. It helps in the removal of unwanted substances like urea
from the blood.
(c) Blood platelets This component of blood helps in blood clotting and prevents blood loss
from the body.
(d) Heart It is a pumping organ that receives blood from the body through veins and pumps
it with enough force into the arteries from where it is carried to the various body parts.

(e) The only artery that carries carbon dioxide rich blood is the pulmonary artery.
The main function of artery is to carry blood away from heart
31. Observe the given diagram of the human respiratory system. List the organs from (A) to
