Challenge Title:

“Mind the Gap: Using Data to Drive Strategy for Mumbai Locals”

Understanding the Challenge Landscape

Mumbai is a city that never sleeps — and if it ever did, it’s because the locals stopped
running. The Mumbai Suburban Railway, often called the lifeline of the city, carries
millions of passengers daily. For decades, it has connected every corner of the city,
kept its economy moving, and served as the most reliable mode of transport for its
people.

But the world around it is changing.

The population is growing. New metro lines and highways are emerging.
Commuters expect more — comfort, speed, connectivity. Infrastructure is under
pressure. And yet, opportunity lies within.

That’s where you come in.

Your Mission:

The Mumbai Suburban Rail Corporation (MSRC) is on a mission to modernize and

future-proof its network. They’ve called upon you — a team of young consultants
and data analysts — to uncover what’s working, what’s not, and what’s possible.

Using a dataset of over 200 stations across different lines of the Mumbai train
network, your job is to:

Understand the current state of station performance, identify opportunities and

pain points, and propose bold, practical ideas to optimize the network and elevate
the commuter experience.

Alongside your data analysis, you are expected to conduct market research to
enrich your recommendations. This could include studying urban mobility trends,
exploring benchmarks from other city transit systems, or understanding commuter
behavior and expectations. Combining data with external insights will help you build
more grounded, relevant, and impactful solutions.

What You Need to Do:

Phase 1 – Analyze

Explore the dataset through basic data visualization and statistical tools. Identify
trends, outliers, patterns, and any areas that spark questions or demand attention.

You may use simple and intuitive plots such as

Bar charts and pie charts for categorical comparison
Line plots to track trends across distance or tim
Histograms for understanding distributions (e.g., footfall
Scatter plots to explore relationships between variable
Heatmaps for comparing metrics across stations or lines

→ Note: You will not be evaluated on how you create the plots or the complexity of your tools. What
truly matters is how well you interpret the data and the quality of insights you derive from your
visualizations.

Phase 2 – Diagnose

Put on your consulting hat. Based on your observations & market research, highlight
key challenges, inefficiencies, or areas of underperformance. At the same time, spot
hidden strengths or emerging patterns that suggest opportunities.

Phase 3 – Recommend

Step into the shoes of a product and business strategist. Based on your diagnosis,
propose actionable and realistic strategies to improve the performance and
experience of the railway network. These may focus on infrastructure, service
models, product offerings, enhance passenger experience or new business ideas.

→ Throughout the process, focus on building a coherent narrative — where your

analysis leads to insights, and your insights lead to impactful, well-reasoned
recommendations.
