Abstract

This study examines the impact of AI-powered tools on language learning, highlighting

issues of accuracy, engagement, and pedagogical challenges. A case study was conducted

with 3 participants, collecting data from task observations, interviews, and feedback analysis.

ChatGPT and Grammarly are the two AI tools employed in this study for the creative and

syntactic assessment of the participants. The findings indicated that though AI tools improve

grammatical precision and engagement, they pose challenges like bias, misleading feedback,

restricted interactive learning and inhibiting cognitive learning and creativity. The study

sheds light on the potential of AI in Language education and indicates areas for further

enhancement.

AI in Language Learning: A Case Study on the Impact of AI-Powered Tools on

Language Learning

This Research aims to gain insights into how language learning can be

affected by AI-powered tools, focusing on accuracy, engagement, and pedagogical

challenges. AI stands out as a prominent force in modern technologies, significantly

impacting the field of academics. Tools like ChatGPT and Grammarly have brought

significant changes to the ELT (English Language Teaching) landscape by offering automated

support, grammatical corrections, and real-time feedback. However, the misuse of these tools

for academic advantage has become a considerable challenge within today’s learning

community. This paper looks at how AI tools affect language learning, focusing on accuracy,

engagement, and teaching challenges. The study aims to understand how AI impacts writing

skills and whether it helps traditional language teaching or could replace it.

Research Methodology

In addition to an extensive literature review, 2 interviews were collected for this study.

This study employs a qualitative case study methodology to comprehensively investigate the

interactions of both students and educators with AI-powered tools, specifically ChatGPT and

Grammarly, within the context of language learning. The research aims to delve deep into

how these innovative technologies influence the educational landscape and the learning

experiences of individuals.

Data collection will encompass several robust methods, including:

- Conducting in-depth interviews with English language learners. This approach aims to

gather nuanced insights into their experiences, perceptions, and attitudes regarding the use of

these AI tools. Through these conversations, we hope to uncover both the benefits and

challenges they encounter in their use of technology for language acquisition.

- Observing the utilization of these AI tools during writing exercises in real-time classroom

settings. These observations will enable us to assess the impact of AI on student engagement,

motivation, and learning outcomes, shedding light on how these tools facilitate or hinder the

writing process in language learning environments.

- Analyzing documents that reflect revisions generated by the AI tools. This analysis will

focus on the extent to which these tools effectively enhance writing quality, grammatical

accuracy, and overall clarity. By examining specific examples of AI-generated revisions, we

will seek to understand how these interventions influence students' writing development.

To synthesize the data collected through these methods, a thematic analysis will be

performed. This analysis will help identify key patterns and trends related to student

engagement, improvements in writing accuracy, and the broader pedagogical implications of

integrating AI tools into language education. By uncovering these insights, the study aims to

contribute meaningfully to the ongoing conversation about the role of technology in language

learning and to inform future pedagogical practices that harness the potential of AI in

education.
