Ch-1 ( Map and Globe)

A. Very short answer type questions.

1. Map is a drawing of the earth or a part of it on a flat

surface.

2. North, South, East and West.

3. The physical maps show different physical feature of

countries.

4. A large scale map indicates small area with fewer

details like guide maps of a city or town.

5. Blue colour is used to show water on the maps.

B. Short answer type questions.

1. We can show and draw a variety of information with the

help of colours. Waterbodies are shown in blue-light blue
for shallow water and dark blue for deep water. Green
colour shows plain areas. As the height of land above sea
level increases, it is shown in yellow light brown and dark
brown colours. Almost the same colour scheme is used on
all maps.
2. Sub-directions are the intermediate directions between
cardinal directions like north-east, south-east, north-west
and south-west. This scheme of direction is followed in
every country of the world.

3. According to the scale, maps are of two types. These

are:

(i) Large Scale Maps: These are the maps which show
small area such as a locality or colony with great details.
The guide maps of a city or town are large scale maps.

(ii) Small Scale Maps: These are the maps which show
large areas like a country or continent with fewer details.
They provide information about a large area.

But according to features shown in the maps, these can

be of three types:

(1) Political maps: They show different countries and

states.

(ii) Physical maps: They show different features like river,

plain etc.
(iii) Thematic maps: They show certain theme like rainfall,
soil etc.

According to the size maps can be of different sizes e.g.,

wall maps are very huge and are used for display.

4. The conventional symbols can explain the map easily.

They provide information on the map which are according
to the scale and standard and can be understood easily
everywhere.

C. Difference between the following:

1. Political and Physical maps:

Political Maps: These maps show different countries,

states, cities, towns in a country.

Physical maps: These maps show different physical

features like rivers, plains, mountains etc.

2. Physical and Thematic maps:

Physical maps: These maps show different physical

features of a country or the world like plains, rivers,
plateau, mountains etc.
Thematic maps: These maps show details of a certain
theme like rainfall, forest, soil, roads etc.

3. Cardinal and Intermediate directions:

Cardinal directions are the main or major four directions

ie., East, West, North and South. Intermediate are
developed directions i.e., North East, South East, North
West and South West.
4. Map and Sketch:

Map shows detailed information about the places of the

earth according to a scale. Sketch is a map which is not
according to the scale.

5. Globe and Map:

The globe is a small and true model of the earth. It is a

three dimensional model. It gives us detailed and correct
information about the shape of the earth. Both the poles,
latitudes and longitudes, oceans and continents are shown
on it.

Map shows detailed information about the places of the

earth according to a scale. It can show different features
such as crops, minerals, industries, and even the means
of transport. Maps are easy to handle. A detailed map is
not less than a voluminous book. It can be folded and can
be printed in the form of a book. It is convenient and better
than a globe.
