Robotics and Mechatronics

Applications
Introduction

 A Robot is a multi-functional mechanical manipulator that can be given

instructions that allows it to repeatedly perform a well-defined task.
 A properly designed robot is a mechatronics system.
 A robot is a reprogrammable machine with several independent degrees
of freedom which can exchange information with other devices.

 A Robot is a complex machine which may contain Mechanical , electrical, Pneumatic,
Hydraulic and Micro-electronics components
 Essentially a robot consists of four components.

1) Drive system:-
The drive system converts or transmits the power to the end
effectors. There are three major types of drive systems used in robots
i) Electrical Drives
ii) Hydraulic Drives
iii)Pneumatic Drives.

2) Control Systems:-
The control system controls the position and velocity of the end
effectors of the robot.

3) Measuring System:-
A Measurement of output is important. The control system
continuously measures the actual position during a motion cycle and compared with
theoretical values, in order to provide corrective action.

4) Sensors:-
The main function of the sensor is to permit the robot to
interact with the environment in an intelligent manner. Various types of sensors are
available nowadays.

1) Teach Station:-
It supports activities such as Robot power up, entry and
editing of a program and the execution of program.

2) Controller:-
Controller controls the overall operation of Robot.

3) Work cell:- (Work Station)

It includes the equipments required for robotic operations.
4) Program Storage Device:-
It is used to store the program used to control the
operation of the robot. i.e. Memory device.

5) Robotic Mechanical Arm:-

It is used to rotate the equipments / sensors connected the
Arm at required degree/ Position.

6) External Drive:-
It supports the Robotic arm to move / rotate at required
location/ position. It may me Electrical, Hydraulics or Pneumatics.

7) End Effectors:-
End effectors are the Sensors/ actuators . It reacts as the
environments conditions.
Types of Robot

1) Cartesian Co-ordinate Robot:-

Types of Robot

1) Cartesian Co-ordinate Robot:-

This robot has three perpendicular axis of motion and able

is to move its grippers to any position within the cube or the rectangle defined as its
working volume.
It can move in X,Y and Z axis.
Types of Robot

2) Cylindrical Co-ordinate Robot:-

Types of Robot

2) Cylindrical Co-ordinate Robot:-

This robot can move its gripper within a volume that is

described by a cylinder.
It can move in two linear movement and one angular
movement/ rotation.
Types of Robot
3) Spherical Co-ordinate Robot:-

3) Spherical Co-ordinate Robot:-

It is known as a Polar Co-ordinate robot. This robot

positions the wrist through four rotation and one linear actuation.

This robot is easy to control.

Applications of Robots

1. Security
Robots are being proposed as security agents as they can protect humans .Currently,
robotics companies are working on pairing robot guards with human security
consultants.

2. Space Exploration
Space institutions like NASA frequently use robots and autonomous vehicles to do things
that humans can’t. For example, Mars Rover is an autonomous robot that travels on
Mars and takes pictures and then sends them back on Earth for the NASA scientists to
study.

3. Entertainment
Robots can be used behind the sets in movies and serials to manage the camera, provide
special effects, etc. Robots can also be used to do stunt work that is very dangerous for
humans but looks pretty cool in an action movie.
Applications of Robots

4. Agriculture
These include seeding, weed control, harvesting, etc. Robots are usually used for
harvesting the crops which allow farmers to be more efficient.

5. Health Care
Robots have changed healthcare a lot. And all for the better! They can help doctors in
performing operations more precisely, also provide therapy to patients, etc.

6. Underwater Exploration
Robots are a great option for exploring places that humans cannot reach easily, like the
depths of the ocean!

7. Food Preparation
Robots that even can cook and create complete meals for you! These robot chefs can
create food using hundreds of different recipes.
Applications of Robots

8. Manufacturing
There are many repetitive and common tasks in the manufacturing industry. These
robots can be trained to perform repetitive tasks with precision under the guidance and
supervision of a human.

9. Military
Robots also have many applications in the military. They can be used as drones to keep
surveillance on the enemy, they can also be used as armed systems to attack the
opposing forces or as Medicare agents to help friendly forces.

10. Customer Service

There are robots that are developed to look exactly like humans for cosmetic purposes.
These robots are primarily used in the field of customer service in high visibility areas to
promote robotics.
