Question 1. Find an equation of the tangent plane to the given surface at the
specified point.
(a) z = 3y 2 − 2x2 + x, (2, −1, −3)
(b) z = 3(x − 1)2 + 2(y + 3)2 + 7, (2, −2, 12)

(c) z = xy, (1, 1, 1)
(d) z = xexy , (2, 0, 2)
(e) z = x sin(x + y), (−1, 1, 0)
(f) z = ln(x − 2y), (3, 1, 0)
Question 2. Find the equation of the tangent plane to the surface at the point
P.
(a) x2 + y 2 + z 2 = 25; P (−3, 0, 4)
(b) z = 4x3 y 2 + 2y; P (1, −2, 12)
(c) z = ln(2x + y); P (−1, 3)
Question 3. Let v(x, y, z) = xy + yz + zx; x, y, z ∈ R. Find the differential dv.
Question 4. Use a total differential to approximate the change in the value of
f from P to Q
(a) f (x, y) = x2 + 2xy − 4x; P (1, 2) to Q(1.01, 2.04)
(b) f (x, y, z) = 2xy 2 z 3 ; P (1, −1, 2) to Q(0.99, −1.02, 2.02)
Question 5. Find the directional derivatives

(a) find the gradient of f


(b) find the directional derivative of f at (1, 3, 0) in the direction of v =
