Exp 8 CN Lab

The experiment aims to configure a WAN network by setting up IP addresses on router interfaces and enabling RIP for routing. Participants will learn about WAN setup, router configuration, and troubleshooting skills. The successful outcome includes proper IP configuration and communication between networks using RIP.

Experiment No 8

1. Aim/Purpose of the Experiment

To configure a WAN network by setting up IP addresses on the router’s Ethernet and Serial ports and
enabling RIP for routing between networks.

2. Learning Outcomes
• Understand the process of WAN setup.
• Learn how to configure router interfaces (Ethernet and Serial).
• Gain knowledge about configuring RIP to enable routing between different networks.
• Develop troubleshooting skills related to network setups and configurations.

3. Prerequisites
• Basic knowledge of IP addressing.
• Understanding of WAN and LAN network topologies.
• Familiarity with router configuration commands.

4. Materials/Equipment/Apparatus / Devices/Software required

Cisco Packet Tracer

5. Introduction and Theory

Wide Area Network (WAN) allows computers located far apart to connect and share resources. Configuring
routers for WAN includes setting up IP addresses on the router’s interfaces (Ethernet and Serial) and
enabling routing protocols like RIP for communication between networks. RIP, a distance-vector routing
protocol, uses hop count as a routing metric to manage network traffic.

6. Operating Procedure

Step 1: Setup the WAN Network

Connect the router to a network using Ethernet and Serial cables.
Ensure proper physical connections for WAN communication between routers.
Step 2: Configure the Router Ethernet Port
Step 3: Configure the Router Serial Port

Step 4: Configure RIP on the Router

Step 5: Verify Configuration

Use the following commands to verify your setup:

o Check IP configuration: show ip interface brief
o Check RIP routing table: show ip route
o Test connectivity: ping the connected devices.

7. Precautions and/or Troubleshooting

• Ensure proper cable connections to avoid network issues.
• Verify the IP addressing scheme for both Ethernet and Serial interfaces.
• Ensure RIP is properly configured to avoid routing issues.

8. Observations

Insert ping result

9. Result & Interpretation

• The WAN network was successfully set up with proper IP configuration on the router’s Ethernet and Serial
ports.
• RIP was configured and enabled successful communication between different networks.
