This document is organized into the following major sections:
SECTION DESCRIPTION
Philosophy Explains the rationale behind flight crew procedural design within this
document.
Approach Capability Reviews what approach procedures the GVI Flight Deck is capable
of executing.
RNAV
Universal Approach Prior to any instrument approach procedure, this section can be
Setup/Briefing utilized to retrieve the procedure from the FMS and subsequently
review, “bug” and brief the approach.
Approaches/Go Single page procedures designed to be reviewed prior to approach
Arounds execution (these are not read-and-do checklists).
Special Approach Special procedures that are generally addendums to the core
Operations procedures previously discussed. Some require special training and/
LOC / LDA
or Letters of Authorization (LOAs).
Ultimately this document attempts to standardize approach methodology and allow crews to
execute a similar plan of attack across multiple approach types, only diverging when needed:

0.2 PHILOSOPHY
There are many ways to execute approach procedures using modern avionics. The intent of this
document is to provide one method to fly approaches using GVI avionics. A variety of approach
ILS
procedures are reviewed using a standardized one-page format.
1. When available, ILS and straight-in RNAV approaches should be selected over other approaches as
they provide the most accurate guidance to the landing runway.
2. Flying initial and intermediate portions of an approach procedure with VNAV selected on the Flight
RNAV
Guidance Panel (FGP) will honor all altitude restrictions prior to the Final Approach Fix with a VPATH
descent. All procedures herein assume that the aircraft is not above the VNAV profile (past top-of-descent). If
above the calculated VNAV profile, use of an alternative vertical mode may be necessary to capture the
profile.
3. APR should be selected once the final approach fix is the “TO” waypoint and the aircraft is at the
LOC / LDA
prescribed procedural altitude, regardless of when “ARM APR” annunciates on the PFD.
4. The Activate Vectors function should only be employed if the flight crew is certain that air traffic
control will not require resumption of the published procedure prior to the Final Approach Fix (FAF)
altitude, as all flight plan waypoints (and associated speed/altitude restrictions) prior to the FAF will be
deleted.
5. APR and VNAV FGP buttons will be selected to the maximum extent possible. Utilizing the APR and
VOR / NDB
VNAV buttons captures the vast majority of requirements for most common approaches and yields Glideslope
(GS) and Vertical Glide Path (VGP) vertical modes (generally providing the highest approach fidelity).
6. EFVS setup steps are incorporated into the UNIVERSAL APPROACH SETUP/BRIEFING section. These
steps are “AS REQUIRED” and do not infer that all approaches should be conducted as an EFVS operation.
7. Continuous Descent Final Approach (CDFA) will be used to the maximum extent to avoid Minimum
CIRCLING
8. The missed approach altitude will always be set no later than 1,000’ above airport elevation (with the
exception of circling maneuvers). By setting the missed approach altitude earlier in the approach procedure
(generally in conjunction with glidepath/descent angle intercept), go-around workload and callouts are
reduced.

NOTE: Do not confuse “RNP” with “RNP (AR)” or approaches with “AUTHORIZATION

Performance Based Navigation (PBN) approach naming convention.
NOTE: The GVI flight deck can execute RNAV approaches to LPV, LNAV/VNAV, and

In these cases, verify that the aircraft is at the prescribed final mandatory altitude before
selecting APR. Failure to do so can result in glideslope/glidepath capture above the
prescribed altitude.

If the retrieved procedure does not have a “RWXX” waypoint, it is possible to receive a
Lateral Cpl Data Invalid and/or Ver3cal Cpl Data Invalid CAS message once past the MAP (visual segment).
ILS
This is normal and is designed to inform the flight crew that there is no FMS-constructed vertical and/or lateral
path from the MAP to the threshold. Crews should brief that this will occur and ensure visual maneuvering to
the landing runway. Examples: KRIL RNAV (GPS) Y Rwy 8, KSAV VOR DME Rwy 19.
Instrument Landing Systems produce multiple glideslopes above and below the procedure’s design glideslope
(commonly in the vicinity of 3.00º). When intercepting glideslopes from above, it is critical to conduct an
altitude/distance calculation before selecting APR. For example, if cleared for a visual approach and five
RNAV
miles from the runway, glideslope capture should occur at roughly 1500’ above field elevation. If well above
this altitude, the glideslope signal may erroneously indicate “on slope” and allow for GS mode to become
active. To prevent this, ensure that the aircraft is at or near the appropriate altitude before selecting APR.
