I.​ Objectives At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a)​ Analyze literature as a reflection of diverse backgrounds and experiences,
b)​ Identify common themes and perspectives in literature from different cultures; and
c)​ Develop empathy and understanding through literary exploration.
II.​Subject Matter Topic: Analyze literature as a mirror to a shared heritage of people with diverse backgrounds.
Content Standard: Understanding literary works as reflections of culture and identity, exploring
themes and analyzing cultural perspectives and their significance in shaping individual and collective
experiences.
Performance Standard: Students can analyze and interpret literary texts to identify themes and
cultural perspective by close reading, contextualizing, and making inferences based on textual
evidence.
Learning Competency: Students can demonstrate empathy and understanding of diverse cultures
through literary analysis, recognizing the significance of cultural heritage and its impact on individual
and collective identities.

4.​ Focus on assigned activities and minimize distractions
5.​ Use devices for educational purposes only, following teacher guidelines.

The teacher will ask students to get up from their seats and:

Stand in an open space.


Dance, stretch, or do some light exercise (like jumping jacks) to upbeat music for 2-3
minutes. When the music stops, take a deep breath and get ready to refocus.
B. Activity The teacher will give the students an activity called “Literary heroes”

Instructions: The teacher will ask students to choose a literary character who embodies resilience,
empathy, or cultural pride and share with the class why this character inspires them.

●​ Her novel “The Joy Luck Club” was a huge success and adapted into a film
●​ Her works often reflect her own experiences growing up in a Chinese-American family.
●​ She is known for writing about cultural identity, family relationships, and the immigrant
experience.
●​ She has written several novels, including “The Kitchen God’s Wife”, “The Hundred Secret
Senses”, and “Saving Fish From Drowning”

Character - it is the person, animal, or entity that takes part in the action of a story, play, or other
literary work.

Setting - it refers to the time, place, and social environment in which the story takes place.

Setting:
San Francisco’s Chinatown

Theme - it is the central idea, concept, or message that the author explores and conveys through the
characters, plot, and setting.

Theme: Cultural identity, Mother-daughter relationship, and generational conflicts.

Plot Structure - It is the organization or sequence of events in a narrative or story. In plot structure we
have Expositon/Introduction, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution.

Plot Structure: The novel is structured around the stories of four Chinese-American mothers and their
four American-born daughters. The narrative jumps between the mothers’ experiences in China and
the daughters’ lives in America, highlighting the cultural divide and the struggles of identity
formation.
