1 ▪ Past Simple Passive
form : to make statements with the past simple passive use:
was / were + past participle ( V3 )

subject + was /were + (past participle )V3+……
2 subject + was / were (not ) + (past participle ) V3+…….
Wh / was / were + [subject ] + (past participle )V3+…..?
Note: we use ‘was ‘for singular noun and pronoun ( I, He, She, It, )
and ‘were’ for plural nouns and pronouns ( you, we, they, ).

Singular plural
I was heard We were heard
You were heard You were heard
He/she/ It was heard They were heard

Positive form
Example:
1. This computer was bought by my brother in 2011.
2. The Angkor wat was built in 1802.

➢ Negative form
To make a vegetive past simple passive form is easy. Just insert ‘Not’
3 between ‘was ’ or ‘were’ and past participle.
( Object+ was /were + not + verb3 +….!)
Example:
1. This house was not (wasn’t) built in 1993!
2. These cars were not (weren’t’) bought by my father!

➢ Question form
To make a question past simple passive form, swap the subject and
‘was’ or ‘were’ the structure for asking question in past simple passive is
( Wh/ was / were +[subject] + past participle+…… )
Example:
1. Was this house built in 1993?
2. Were these cars bought by my father?
3. When was the test passed?
4. Where were the children grown ?

❖ When to use past simple passive

✓ Usage : we use past passive to talk about some complete action in
the past .we use it with the same meaning as past simple in the active
voice except for the fact that past simple passive makes focus on the
effect ( or the Object ) rather than the doer ( the subject) of an action.
