LESSON 3A: SENTENCE COMPLETION


This question type frequently given in Sections 3 and 4 of the Listening test. You will
be provided with a number of incomplete sentences which you need to complete using
the information from the recorded text. Generally, you must complete each statement in
no more than three words. Remember to read the instructions carefully to be able to
answer at instructed. Specifically, you answer with one, two, or three words. If you
think you need a more-than three-word answer to a certain question, this answer is
certainly incorrect.
This question type tests your ability to:
• skim for general Information
• read for details
• understand paraphrases is incomplete sentences
At the end of the task, when you arc given 30 seconds to check your answers, read your
completed sentences to make sure they are all grammatically correct (for example,
check that in your answer, you are not adding an article or a preposition which is
already in the sentence) and also check your spelling.

Strategies
- Read the sentences before you listen -
- Predict not only the type of information or pair of speech that is needed, but also
what the missing word or words could actually be.
- Write your answers exactly as you hear than.
- Re-check your answers to determine if they are grammatically fit.
- Check for correct spelling.
- Be alert. A word limit is given; for example, if the instructions require ‘No more
than three words', use no more than three words.
