CHEMISTRY PAPER – II Max. Marks: 68
(Science Pre-Engineering & Pre-Medical Groups) Time: 2 Hours 40 minutes
According to New Book SECTION ‘B’
(SHORT-ANSWER QUESTIONS) Marks : 36
Note: Answer any Nine part questions. Select Four part questions from Inorganic – General Chemistry and Five part questions
from Organic Chemistry. All part questions carry equal marks.
INORGANIC – GENERAL CHEMISTRY
2. i) What is flame test? Why alkali and alkaline earth metals give coloured flame? Mention the colour of flame of any two
alkali metals.
OR
Give reasons for the following:
* H2 SO4 behave as oxidizing agent.
In sulfuric acid, the oxidation state of sulfur is +6, it undergoes reduction to form SO2 which has +4
oxidation state. Due to the reduction of H2SO4 it has the ability to oxidize others. Hence, it is an
oxidizing agent.
* Gallium has smaller atomic radii then alumuinium.
Gallium has smaller atomic radii than aluminum due to the shielding effect of 3d orbitals.
* Acidity of hydrogen halides increases from HF to HI
Acidity of hydrogen halides increases from HF to HI because of decreasing bond energies. When the bond
becomes weaker than H+ ions are lost easier which increases the acidic character.
* Binding energy of zinc is least in 3d series.
Binding energy depends upon the number of unpaired electrons. Since zinc does not contain any unpaired electron
hence it has least binding energy.
ii) Write the IUPAC name of the following:
* sodiumtetrahydroxoplatinate(II)
*hexacyanoferrate(III)ion
*trisethylenediaminechromium(III)ion
*triamminetrinitrocobalt(III)
iii) Why the compounds of d – block elements colored? Explain in term of crystal field theory.
