What’s RAID?
RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is a data storage virtualization technology that combines
multiple physical disk drive components into one or more logical units for the purposes of data redundancy,
performance improvement, or both.

53
Configuring RAID- Creating RAID 1 (1) - Table 1- Parameters (1)
Parameter Description
Select RAID Level Selects a RAID level.
Specifies where the virtual member drives come from.
Select Drives The values include:
From •Unconfigured Capacity: idle drives that are not added to any virtual drives
•Free Capacity: remaining space of the virtual drives
Select Drives Selects the member drives to be added.
Virtual Drive
Specifies the name of a virtual drive.
Name
Specifies the capacity of a virtual drive. By default, the value is the maximum capacity supported.
Virtual Drive Size NOTE: To create multiple virtual drives, set the capacity of the first virtual drive as required. After creating the first virtual drive, see Creating
Multiple Virtual Drives to add other virtual drives.
Virtual Drive Size
Specifies the unit of the virtual drive capacity.
Unit
Strip Size Specifies the size of a virtual drive strip. Its value can be 64 KB, 128 KB, 256 KB, 512 KB, or 1 MB.
Specifies the read policy of a virtual drive. The options are as follows:
•No Read Ahead: Disable the Read Ahead function.
•Read Ahead: Enable the Read Ahead function. The controller pre-reads sequential data or the data predicted to be used and saves it in the
Read Policy
cache.
The default value is Read Ahead.
NOTE: To achieve optimal drive performance, set the read policy to Read Ahead for HDDs and No Read Ahead for SSDs.
Specifies the write policy of a virtual drive. The options are as follows:
•Write Back: When the controller cache receives all data, the controller sends the host a message indicating that data transmission is
complete.
•Write Through: When the drive subsystem receives all data, the controller sends the host a message indicating that data transmission is
complete.
Write Policy
•Always Write Back: The controller enters the Write Back mode when supercapacitor is absent or faulty.
The default value is Write Back.
•NOTE: In Always Write Back mode, DDR (Cache) write data of the RAID controller card will be lost when the server is powered off and the
54 supercapacitor is faulty, uninstalled or charging. This mode is not recommended. This mode is not recommended.
•To achieve optimal drive performance, set the write policy to Write Back for HDDs and Write Through for SSDs.
Configuring RAID- Creating RAID 1 (1) - Table 1- Parameters (2)
Parameter Description
Specifies the I/O policy for reading data in special virtual drives. The policy does not affect the Read Ahead function. The options are as
follows:
•Direct: The value has different definitions in read and write scenarios.
• In a read scenario, data is directly read from drives. (If Read Policy is set to Read Ahead, data is read from the RAID cache.)
I/O Policy
• In a write scenario, data is written into the cache. (If Write Policy is set to Write Through, data is directly written into drives.)
•Cached: Data is read from or written to the cache. Set this parameter only when CacheCade 1.1 is configured.
The default value is Direct.
NOTE: For firmware 5.140.00-3319 and later versions, the I/O policy cannot be set to Cached.
Specifies the data access policy. The options are as follows:
•Read/Write: Read and write operations are accessed.
Access Policy
•Read Only: The virtual drive is read-only.
•Blocked: The virtual drive is blocked from access.
Specifies the cache policy for the physical drives. The options are as follows:
•Unchanged: Use the current cache policy.
Drive Cache •Enable: Write data to the cache before writing data to the drive. This option improves data write performance. However, data will be lost if
there is no protection mechanism against power failures.
•Disable: Write data to the drive without caching the data. Data is not lost if power failures occur.
Disable
Background Enables or disables background initialization.
Initialization
Specifies the default initialization mode. The options are as follows:
Default •No: Do not perform initialization.
Initialization •Fast: Perform fast initialization.
•Full: Perform full initialization.
Sets the sector size reported to the OS.
•Default: If there are any 512e drives among member drives, the physical bytes per sector are shown as 512e (4k). If there are no 512e drives,
Emulation Type the physical bytes per sector are shown as 512n.
•Disable: If there are no 512e drives among member drives, the physical bytes per sector are shown as 512n.
•Force: Even though there are no 512e drives among member drives, the physical bytes per sector are shown as 512e (4k).
55
Save
Saves the settings.
Configuration
Configuring RAID- Creating RAID 1 (3)
3. Selects a RAID level.
a. Use the ↑ and ↓ arrow keys to select a RAID level and press Enter.
b. Select RAID 1 and press Enter.
Parameter Description
To create multiple VDs, set Virtual Drive Size as required. see Creating Multiple Virtual Drives to add
other VDs.
58
OS Installation
Smart Provisioning is an OS installation wizard that simplifies the process for engineers to install OSs and drivers.
This method requires iBMC 2.64 or later and BIOS 0.37 or later.
Using Smart Smart Provisioning has the following features:
Provisioning •Helps users install OSs and drivers required by the detected hardware.
•Provides a wizard to make installation processes more simple and consistent.
•Simplifies and speeds up OS deployment on servers.
59
Installing an OS Using a DVD or Image File
Before installing an OS, access Compatibility Checker to check whether the OS supports this installation method.
This section describes how to install an OS by using an installation DVD or ISO image file. You do not need to install
drivers or compile the installation source during installation.
For details about how to install other OSs, see the corresponding server OS installation guide cases. To obtain the
server OS installation guide cases, contact technical support.
