Legend:

• “3” – has the skills and was able to perform the task correctly
• “2” – has the skills, seldom performs the task; lacks confidence (e.g. display
nervousness, unsure of what should be done)

Goal: Enable the health worker to perform a health care procedure with ease and deftness, to
save time and effort with the end view of rendering effective nursing care to clients.

o Cotton in sterile water
• In the center of the bag
o 2 pairs of forceps (Straight and curved)
o 1 surgical scissors
o Sterile dressing (OS and cotton balls)
o Roller bandage
o Syringes (5 and 2 ml)
o Hypodermic needles (g. 19, 22, 23, 25)
o Sterile cord clamp
o Kidney basin
• On top of the file, center of the bag
o Hand towel in plastic bag
o Soap in soap dish
o Apron
o Plastic/linen lining
• Pocket of bag
o Surgical gloves
o Waste paper for receptacles
*BP apparatus and stethoscope are carried separately and are
never placed in the bag.
*Folded paper lining inserted between the flaps and cover of
the bag.

2. Upon arrival at the patient’s home, place the bag on the


table lined with a clean paper. The clean side must be out
and the folded part, touching the table.
3. Ask for a basin of water or a glass of drinking water if tap
water is not available.
4. Open the bag and take out the towel and soap.
5. Wash hands using soap and water, wipe to dry.
6. Take out the apron form the bag and put it on with the right
side.
7. Close the bag and put it in one corner of the working area.
8. Proceed in performing the necessary care and treatment.
9. After giving the treatment, clean all things that were used
and perform hand washing.
10. Open the bag and return all that were used in their proper
places after cleaning them.
11. Remove apron, folding it away from the person, and soiled
side in and the clean side out.
12. Fold the lining, place it inside the bag and close the bag.
13. Take the record and have a talk with the mother.
14. Write down all the necessary data that were gathered,
observations, care and treatment rendered.
15. Give instructions for care of patients in the absence of the
midwife.
16. Make appointment for the next visit (either home or clinic)
taking note of the date and time.
