ASSIGNMENT 2
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION PROJECT: ROOFING AND FLOORING SYSTEMS

Project Overview:
- In this assignment, students are required to focus on the floor and roof systems for the design
and development of an office building. The assignment involves studying and drawing
structural systems, specifically the flat plate and open web metal joist (OWJ) systems.

Assignment Objectives
1. Acquire knowledge of FLOOR and ROOF systems function, construction materials and its structural
behavior and construction methods.
2. Ability to understand, study, develop and draw FLAT PLATE and Open Web Metal Joist systems and its
integration and connection to structural and nonstructural components.
3. Acquire knowledge of structural design of floor system, by applying span depth ratio, or using tables
4. To apply relevant building standards and codes in the design of the floor and roof systems.

Project Deliverables
As part of the design process, it is necessary to reconsider the structural grid to accommodate the
chosen floor and roof systems. This project requires detailed working drawings, sectional details, and
construction components to provide a comprehensive understanding of the structural floor and roof
design. The submission should include the following working drawings, presented clearly and in an
organized manner:

1. Structural Floor Plans (1:100)

o Column layout showing axes.
o RC Solid Slab: Structure floor plan of the reinforced concrete solid slab skeleton system.
o Flat Plate System: Roof structural floor plan showing the flat plate system.
o OWJ System: Structural floor plan illustrating the spacing and arrangement of the open
web metal joist system.
2. Section (1:50)
o A section through the floor and roof system, showing the necessary construction
components and structural information.
3. Details (1:10 or 1:5)
o 2 Main Basic details of the proposed floor systems, including OWJ system components.
The detail should focus on materials, joints, and connection details.
4. Technical Details and Calculations
o Use tables, charts, or span ratios to estimate the cross-sectional dimensions of the
structural components.
o Include notes on the standards and codes applied in the design process.
5. Additional Details (Optional)
o Students are encouraged to provide more details or information beyond what is
required to enrich the study and improve the design.

Additional Instructions
- Assume any dimensions or details not provided in the proposed design.
- Use the appropriate building codes and standards for your study and application of the floor and
roof systems.
- Students may add further design elements or suggestions to enhance the accuracy or
effectiveness of the structural system design.
- Presentation of structural details using tables, charts, and diagrams is highly encouraged.

Submission Requirements
• Due Date: The due date is on week 9 and the exact date will be announced on the BlackBoard
• Submission: Submit a digital copy of your working drawings (both PDF and CAD files) through
Blackboard and bring a printed set to lab.
• Grading: This assignment counts for 7% of the total course grade
