Introduction
This study primarily focuses on how community members’ behaviors can have a
significant impact on not only our environment but also their health. With the compost pit
and shredder that should have plan, the barangay’s carbon footprint and smoke pollution
would be lessened. This is a guarantee from the community that they will stop burning
their trash. In our barangay the most common problem is the improper waste disposal
which could affect the current living of the residents. These issues have the potential to
affect not just the locals but also the ecosystem. The residents’ understanding of their
existing circumstances is derived from personal experience. Even though they were able
to advise others who could encounter similar circumstances by carefully sorting their
waste, they were forced to incinerate their rubbish since they lacked the finances to pay
for garbage truck collection.
How Improper Waste Disposal Affects the Environment?
Waste disposal is one of the most important industries in the world. Without
waste disposal, the massive production industries produce too much and quickly destroy
the environment. This is apparent when you consider how improper waste disposal
affects the environment. If you want a better understanding of why waste disposal is so
important an inefficient municipal solid waste management system may create serious
negative environmental impacts like infectious diseases, land and water pollution,
obstruction of drains and loss of biodiversity.
Imagine walking down the streets of your barangay, surrounded by piles of trash.
This is the unfortunate reality caused by improper waste disposal practices in every
household. We should avoid throwing trash everywhere specifically in canals, river and
even on road, we must help to improve our environment to achieve maintaining the
cleanliness in our community. In this case study, we will explore the impact of this issue
and potential solutions to create a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone’s good
sake. Cleanliness is not just the responsibility of one, but the collective effort of all in our
barangay. Together, we can make our community shine.
Improper waste disposal refers to the removal, disposal, recycling, or destruction
of unwanted materials such as waste generated by agriculture, domestic use, or industrial
products. Following proper waste disposal procedures will result in less pollution and
environmental hazards. Not only does improper waste disposal lead to unsightly
surroundings, but it also poses serious health and environmental risks. From overflowing
landfills to polluted water sources, the consequences of this problem are far-reaching. By
delving into the root causes and examining effective strategies, we can work towards a
more sustainable and waste-free future for our community if we help one another as
human living in one community and as neighborhoods in our specific barangays,
Research Objectives
1.) The impact of improper waste disposal in Barangay Cadayonan II
2.) Identifying the main cause of improper waste disposal
3.) The effect of improper waste disposal in every household barangay
Theoretical Framework
Theoretical Framework is used to guide the analysis and interpretation of data in a
case study. It provides a clear explanation of the key concepts, variables, and
relationships that are relevant to the research questions. The Theory on Waste
Management (2004) by E. Pongrácz, P. S. Phillips, and R. L. Keiski is used as a reference
through the progression of the study. In this study I also used reference is the Solid Waste
Management by the World Bank Organization.
A law in the Philippines approved by the Office on the President on January 26,
2001 was created in response to the rapidly growing rate of garbage problem in the
country caused by improper waste disposal. Unfortunately, even though there is a law,
improper waste disposal in the Philippines was ranked 3rd a top source of water
contamination in a study on February 2015. Also REPUBLIC ACT NO. 9003 said an act
providing for an ecological solid waste management program, creating the necessary
institutional mechanisms and incentives, declaring certain acts prohibited and providing
penalties, appropriating funds therefor, and for other purposes.
Related Studies
I think the best option to maintain or to help improve the cleanliness in every
household barangay is we need to follow or use the 3 R’s the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
to lessen the problem of our environment. According to E.Pongrácz, P. S.Phillips, and R.
L.Keiski “The Theory of Waste Management is a unified body of knowledge about waste
and waste management, and it is founded on the expectation that waste management is to
prevent waste to cause harm to human health and the environment and promote resource
use optimization. Waste Management Theory is to be constructed under the paradigm of
Industrial Ecology as Industrial Ecology is equally adaptable to incorporate waste
minimization and/or resource use optimization goals and values.” The World Bank helps
governments plan and explore locally appropriate solutions through technical expertise,
and data and analytics. What a Waste 2.0: A Global Snapshot of Solid Waste
Management to 2050 captures the latest trends in waste management.
People are suffering environmental dilemmas such as global warming, flash
floods, and etc. and the causes of these problem is the misbehavior of the people towards
waste management. Some people are careless to the environment by just in throwing
their garbage everywhere they want. They do not think of the possible results of their
actions on the environmental as especially on health. The soil, water, and air pollution
can all be a result of improper waste disposal. Examples of improper waste disposal
includes littering, hazardous waste that is dumped into the ground, and not recycling
items that should be recycled.
The majority of Individuals in our barangay burn their trash; this is not an
environmentally friendly method of disposal and can have negative effects on the
barangay as well as the people who breathe in the smoke. This way of waste disposal can
also lead to a number of diseases especially respiratory diseases, such as asthma,
bronchitis and emphysema. If trash is burned without supervision, it can also be harmful
since the fire might spread and destroy neighboring trees, wooden structures, and
animals.
This method of disposal significantly adds to the global warming phenomenon
since burning waste releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which in turn pollutes
the air. The state of the globe is currently dire, and issues like these need to be addressed
since they contribute to climate change and global warming, which could have negative
effects on future generations of humans. Given these two connected issues that could
arise in the residents of barangay would endure hardships in with reference to their source
of income, farming. Since the atmosphere. Completely shattered plants or grains that
farmers are cultivating will also cause them to die quickly.
Disposing of waste has huge environmental impacts and can cause serious
problems. Proper garbage disposal is important to ensure everyone’s safety from possible
health hazards. People will suffer in the next years of existence if we continue this kind
of activity. There are causes and effects of improper waste disposal. Some causes of
improper waste disposal are: People are unaware of consequences of their irresponsible
acts. People are not following the correct rules of proper waste disposal. People throw the
garbage in what place they want and they have no care what will be the effect of it.
People are burning plastic instead of keeping it and recyclable it.
The effects of Improper waste disposal are: The soil contamination does not only
affect plant growth, it is also unhealthy to humans and animals feeding on those plants.
The skin irritation and blood infections resulting from direct contact with waste, and
transmitting bacteria from waste to infected wounds. Waste that releases dioxins are also
dangerous and pose a health risk when they diffuse into the air that we breathe.
Some of the residents in our barangay burned their garbage. Their garbage is the
current problem that is visible in our barangay, removal and lack of a garbage truck.
Inappropriate disposal of trash is one of the current issues facing the Philippines,
presently with difficulty because people are the source of this issue. Several studies exist
carried undertaken over the years that determined the significance of appropriate garbage
disposal in the neighborhood and the consequences of inappropriate garbage disposal on
the neighborhood, both the locals’ health and the environment. This section provides an
introduction to each of them. In the Philippines, improper disposal of waste is one of the
main environmental problems. It led to more serious issues that impact people’s lives and
health in addition to the environment.
Waste management is a pressing global issue that demands immediate attention.
As our population continues to grow, the volume of waste generated is increasing
exponentially, resulting in detrimental effects on our environment, human health, and
economic well-being. It is imperative that we adopt effective waste management
practices to tackle this problem head-on. By implementing sustainable waste
management strategies, we not only protect our planet but also pave the way for a
brighter and cleaner future for generations to come.
Clean-up drives have emerged as powerful initiatives that bring communities
together to tackle environmental challenges head-on. These collective efforts to clean and
restore our surroundings have a far-reaching impact on our ecosystems, public health, and
overall well-being. In this persuasive essay, we will explore the significance of clean-up
drives, highlighting their ability to empower individuals, foster community spirit, and
create lasting positive change.
One of the primary reasons why effective waste management is crucial is its
potential to safeguard the environment. Improper waste disposal leads to the pollution of
air, water, and soil, causing irreparable damage to ecosystems and wildlife. By
implementing comprehensive waste management systems, such as recycling, composting,
and waste-to-energy initiatives, we can minimize the negative impact on our
environment. These practices conserve resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and
mitigate pollution, ensuring cleaner air, healthier soil, and unpolluted water bodies.
Improper waste disposal is the disposal of waste in a way that has negative
consequences for the environment. Examples include littering, hazardous waste that is
dumped into the ground, and not recycling items that should be recycled.
Causes
1. Ignorance: Ignorance of people about proper waste disposal. People are
unaware of consequences of their unwise acts.
2. Laziness: Can cause improper garbage disposal because people not following
the correct rules of proper waste disposal their always throw it what place they
want and they have no care what will be the effect of it.
3. Greed: Can cause improper garbage disposal for example burning tires of
wheel and plastic instead of keeping it or trade the excess automobile cars
tires to maximize on it.
This issue could be fix it, or it will continue to be an issue for the nation in the
coming years. Improper waste disposal is a significant environmental issue. There have
been numerous studies highlighting the negative impacts of improper waste disposal on
ecosystems, public health, and the overall environment. These studies often emphasize
the importance of proper waste management practices, such as recycling, composting,
and responsible disposal methods, to mitigate the harmful effects of improper waste
disposal. It’s crucial for individuals and communities to be aware of the consequences
and take steps towards sustainable waste management.
Effects of improper waste disposal.
Land Pollution
Land pollution happens whenever waste ends up on soil or other land that people
should process instead. This garbage doesn’t just sit there; the contents break down,
whether by rotting or time and seep into the area around it. This means the dirt and all
surrounding areas absorb the pollution and become dangerous for people and animals.
Water Pollution
Whatever waste doesn’t go into landfills or other disposal areas usually finds its
way into the ocean or other bodies of water. It then breaks down into the ocean, slowly
contaminating the water and choking out the life that water hosts. This process raises the
toxicity of the water, making freshwater unsafe for human consumption and any body of
water toxic for those swimming in the water. Since water travels and is a great solvent,
the pollutants don’t easily leave the area and can contaminate other water sources.
Air Pollution
Air pollution is a major issue worldwide, and understanding how improper waste
disposal affects the environment through air pollution is necessary. A basic understanding
of air pollution states that greenhouse gases build up in the atmosphere and cause massive
global climate change. Improper waste disposal is a contributor to excess gases entering
the atmosphere and causing these problems. The breakdown of the waste releases gases
like methane, which is a major factor in global climate change.
Climate Change
A huge issue that comes from all forms of pollution is the contribution and impact
it has on the global climate. Waste contributes to the gases that thicken the ozone layer.
This, in turn, worsens the weather and melts the ice caps, raising the sea level and
negatively impacting natural habitats and the homes of billions of people.
Extreme Weather
Climate change has also caused a gradual increase in the frequency of extreme
weather and natural disasters. Due to the change in climate, there has been a noticeable
increase in disasters like tornadoes and floods. Even the presence of hurricanes has
become more prevalent because of climate change.
Disease
Unprocessed waste is a huge breeding ground for major diseases. All kinds of
diseases can use places like landfills; even contaminated waters can host all manners of
horrible diseases. These diseases can affect animals, plants, and people alike—
improperly processed waste is horrible for the health of all living things.
Plant Death
Contaminants in both the air and water have horrible effects on plants, as soil with
contaminants will kill most plants. Even if there are no contaminants in the soil, the water
brought by the rain can be toxic for plants and kill them.
Animal and Marine Death
Plants aren’t the only things that suffer when it comes to waste; both land and sea
animals die from waste left around. From sea turtles and fish dying because of plastic in
the sea to animals eating hazardous materials left lying around, there’s a lot of death in
nature because of this waste. In this way, improper waste disposal directly leads to the
extinction of many species every day, causing permanent damage to ecosystems across
the globe.
Loss of Habitats
Every animal has a range of environments it can survive in. This is why you only
see specific species in certain locations. However, waste contributes to global climate
change, which changes the size of the habitats animals need to survive. A decreasing
habitat size drives species like polar bears to extinction as they attempt migrations out of
the areas.
Lower Biodiversity
The extinction of species and deaths of crops means the biodiversity across the
world is slowly lowering. This is bad for the health of nature, as lower biodiversity
increases the chances of complete extinction during a disaster. With fewer different
species, diseases have an easier time traveling, and leaving fewer species that can survive
environmental changes.
Worsening Infrastructure
There are a lot of changes to the world outside of global climate change that
comes from waste; even infrastructure suffers from waste problems. Plastics and other
wastes in local water sources will clog drains and contaminate drinking water. Areas of
land pollution are breeding grounds for pests, like rats, which flourish in dirty
environments.
“Dead” Zones
We often don’t consider places like landfills as “dead” space, but they’re exactly
that. The more trash and waste flows into these fills, the bigger they grow and the more
numerous they become. These create places where nothing else can exist, as the space is
useful only for waste and garbage, thus creating an area that serves no other purpose.
Human Impact
Between all the diseases and climate change that improperly processed waste
creates, it’s easy to see how this impacts every person. The worsening of the environment
stems partially from the mistreatment of waste, and ending any practices that contribute
to extra waste can help save many lives and keep the world’s environment in a healthy
place.
For many people, the reduction of waste and commitment to handling waste
properly is a daunting task. Some even feel that it’s too late and there’s no point.
However, every change people make by properly disposing of waste can save lives and
suffering in the future, even if it’s only a few people. Additionally, it increases the chance
of something major changing and fixing the issue overall. So always be sure you’re
assisting in the proper management of waste and not speeding the environment towards a
dangerous end.
Implementing effective waste management systems, such as providing accessible
recycling facilities and promoting initiatives like waste segregation, can also make a
significant impact. It’s all about working together to create a cleaner and healthier
environment for future generations.
Here are some key solutions for us to avoid improper waste disposal and to help
our environment to achieve maintaining the cleanliness in every household barangay:
1. Education and awareness: Promote knowledge about proper waste
management practices through campaigns, workshops, and educational programs.
2. Recycling: Encourage recycling of materials like paper, plastic,
glass, and metal to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills.
3. Composting: Encourage composting of organic waste like food
scraps and yard trimmings to create nutrient-rich soil.
4. Waste segregation: Implement systems for separating different
types of waste to facilitate recycling and proper disposal.
5. Reduce and reuse: Encourage the reduction of waste generation
and promote the reuse of items whenever possible.
These are just a few solutions, and it’s important to tailor approaches to specific
communities.
Conclusion
In conclusion, improper waste disposal poses significant environmental and health
risks. It not only pollutes our land, water, and air but also contributes to the depletion of
natural resources. To address this issue, it is crucial to raise awareness about proper waste
management practices through education and community engagement. Implementing
effective waste management systems, such as recycling, composting, and waste
segregation, can help minimize the negative impacts of improper waste disposal.
As part of citizens in our barangay, we have to put in some effort and do our best
to save the environment. It is important to cut down the waste that contributes to the
landfills. If we all practise recycling and upcycling in our day-to-day life, By taking these
steps, we can work towards a cleaner and healthier environment for present and future.
Damping of wastes in an improper manner will leads the human being to face the world
with the harmful diseases. It may affect all the living thing in the world even the food
chain will be affected, water, air& land will be polluted and at last we don’t have clean
air to breathe , clean land to live, clean water to drink & food to eat. So, we should avoid
plastic and dispose the solids in proper manner and give the earth as good place to
survive to next generation.
Implementing good to our environment is a big help to one’s another health not
just you but all of you living in that specific area. So Let’s join hands and make a positive
impact by adopting responsible waste management practices in our daily lives.
