DIGITAL IMAGING FOLIO

Anna Ng
A RO UND T H E WO R LD - BE FO R E
AROUND THE WORLD- AFTER
AROUND THE WORLD - HOW IT WAS DONE

• I began by searching for an image of my desired place around the world, making sure the dimensions
were large enough to retain good resolution after zooming in on Photoshop.
• After embedding my image to the file, I adjusted it to fit the set dimensions.
• In a new layer, I inserted a picture of myself and added a layer mask where I used the automatic
transparency tool to erase my background and isolate my head/shoulders. To refine, I changed the type
of erasing tool, using my cursor to manually clean up any excess edges.
• To make the colouring in my own photo match that of my chosen image, I added a photo filter layer
and from that created a clipping mask (so that the properties of my background wouldn’t change).
From there, I experimented with the presets before choosing my own colours, trying a range of tones
and adjusting the density.
• To further increase realism, I again added another layer, then a mask to my photo to match the
background image’s lighting. I adjusted the brightness, contrast, saturation, etc. according to what suited
it the most.
• I repeated these steps for each “around the world” project.
OPEN YOUR EYES (CLONING)
OPEN YOUR EYES - HOW IT WAS DONE

• I downloaded an image of a face from google, then embedded it in my Photoshop file

• Using the clone stamp tool, I cloned his right eye onto his forehead
• The healing tool was next used to blend the edges of the new cloned image onto its
new background
• Then, I used a combination of the cloning and healing tool tool retouch his skin,
removing his wrinkles and smile lines.
ADJUSTMENTS, LAYERS AND
FILTER EXPERIMENTATION
ADJUSTMENTS, LAYERS AND
FILTER EXPERIMENTATION
- HOW IT WAS DONE

• To set the 3 x 3 grid, I set guides across the file, putting in a 33.3% and 66.6% line so that guides
would appear on each vertical third. I repeated this for the horizontal lines.
• After embedding my chosen image, I adjusted it to the approximate size of one grid before
making a layer mask where, using the rectangle marquee tool, I cropped the image to fit between
the set guide lines.
• I duplicated the layer and moved it to fill the second box, then the third, then held shift to select
all three layers, duplicating the whole row to fill the second one. I repeated this to fill the grid.
• I then converted each layer to a smart object, where I made a layer mask and experimented with
smart filters on a filter layer
• After I chose and applied a filter, I saved the image changes and added a text box where I labelled
that box accordingly
• I repeated these steps for each image, with varying filters
BLACK AND WHITE – DRAWING FOCUS
BLACK AND WHITE – HOW IT WAS
DONE

• I first found an image of suitable resolution and embedded it to my file.

• Then I created a new adjustment layer on top of the image layer and chose “black and
white”
• To edit the mask, I double clicked on it and I used the erase tool to highlight the area
where I wanted colour to show.
• The contrast of the coloured object against its black and white surroundings creates
the desired emphasis, drawing focus to it.
SURREALIST COLLAGE - BEFORE
SURREALIST COLLAGE -
AFTER
SURREALIST COLLAGE – HOW IT WAS
DONE

• After downloading a zip file containing the collage images, I embedded them into my photoshop file, each image now
on its own layer.
• I first adjusted the skull image to fit over the male’s face by using scale and rotate in transform, then on a layer mask, I
erased the parts of the image that I didn’t need.
• With the flame image, I replaced the female’s hair by first using the clone tool to cover up the area, then the healing
tool to even the tone and blend.
• I then adjusted the flame image to overlay now blank area, using scale, rotate and distort in transform to get my desired
shape. On a layer mask, I again erased the background of the flame image, then changed the blending setting from
normal to screen. This changed its opacity and colour to my liking.
• To replace the face of the male’s watch, I erased the undesired parts of the eyeball image on a layer mask. I adjusted it
to fit over the face using scale and blended the edges with the eraser tool set on decreased hardness.
• To change the colour of the female’s shirt, I first selected the original image layer, changed the blending mode to
multiply, and finally locked it.
• After changing the background layer to a solid layer, I chose a colour and selected the brush tool to go over her shirt,
where the colour peeks through but the shirt’s original details are retained. For the male’s pants, I repeated this with a
different colour, as well as the female’s makeup.
• To finish, I applied a grain filter to the entire final image.
