Chapter 1 – Introduction of railway


Introduction to Railways

Railways are an essential mode of transportation that revolutionized travel, trade, and economic
development world railway system consists of tracks, locomotives, and rolling stock (passenger
coaches or freight wagons) that operate over a network designed for efficient movement of
people and goods.

Types of Railways

Railways have evolved significantly, adapting to various needs and technological advancements.
Some key types
Include-:

1)Steam Railways – The first generation of rail transport, powered by steam engines

2) Electric Railways – More efficient and widely used for metro and urban transit

3) High-Speed Rail – Trains capable of speeds exceeding 250 km/h.

4)Freight Railways – Dedicated to transporting goods

Impact of Railways

Railways have played a crucial role in shaping modern economies. They facilitate rapid
industrialization, enhance connectivity between cities, and contribute to reduced transportation
costs. They also provide sustainable option,reducing reliance on road transport and decreasing
emissions.

Course outcome

Show the components of railway track in the given cross section of track .

1. To visit information collect for various types of railway tracks.
2. To collect the information of sleppers,rails,ballast etc.
3. To collect information of outgoing and incoming of trains from one to another
station.
