I) Reaction Calculation:

∑Fy = 0

RA = 20+20+10×3 = 70kN

II) SF Calculation:

A = +70kN

BL = +70-10×1=60kN

BR = +60-20=+40kN

CL = +40-20=+20kN

C = +20-20=0kN ( ok)

III) BM Calculation:

C = 0 (B is Free end)

B = - 20×2 - (10×2×1) = - 60 kN-m

A = - 20×3 - 20×1- (10×3×1.5) = -125 kN-m

2. Draw shear force and bending moment diagram for cantilever beam of 5 m span. Beam
is loaded with udl of 15 N/m over entire span. Vertically downward point load of 100 N at
its free and clockwise moment of 50 Nm at its mid span.

I) Reaction Calculation:

∑ Fy = 0

RA = 15×5+100 = 175N

II) SF Calculation:

SF at A = +175N

BL = +175-(15×5) = +100N

B = +100-100 =0N (⸫ ok)

III) BM Calculation:

BM at B = 0 kN-m (⸪B is Free end)

CR = -100×2.5-15×2.5×1.25 = -296.875 N-m

CL = -100×2.5-15×2.5×1.25-50 = -346.875N-m

A = -100×5-15×5×2.5-50 = -737.5N-m

3. Draw shear force and bending moment for simply supported beam as shown in Fig.

I) Reaction Calculation:

∑MA = 0

RB×5.5 = (2×2) ×1+1.5×2+30

RB = 6.72kN

∑Fy = 0

RA+RB = (2×2) + 1.5

RA= -1.22kN

II) SF Calculation:

SF at A = -1.22kN

CL = -1.22-(2×2)= -5.22kN

CR = -5.22-1.5 = -6.72kN

BL = -6.72kN

B= -6.72+6.72 = 0kN (⸫ ok)

III) BM Calculation:

BM at A and B = 0 (⸪ Supports A and B are simple)

C = -1.22×2-(2×2) ×1 = -6.44kN-m

DL = 6.72×2.5-30= -13.2kN-m

DR = 6.72×2.5 = +16.8kN-m

Find the bending stress at a distance of 25 mm below top edge of
rectangular beam section 80mm x 240 mm deep if maximum bending
moment is 5 kN.m.

A circular beam carries a maximum shear force of 10kN. Find the

A simply supported beam carries a udl of intensity 2.5kN/m over entire

A solid circular column is 4m long with both ends fixed, carries a safe axial
load 500kN. Using Euler’s equation, calculate the diameter of column. Take
E=100kN/m2 and Factor of safety 2.5.

A Steel rod 15 m long is at a temperature of 150C. Find the free expansion


of the length when the temperature is raised to 650C. Find the temperature

stresses when the expansion of the rod is fully prevented. Take, α = 12×10-6
per 0C. E = 2×105 N/mm2

State four assumptions made in Euler’s theory.

1. Compressive load on the column is exactly axial.

2. Material of the column is perfectly homogenous and isotropic.

3. Column is initially straight and of uniform lateral dimensions.

4. Self-weight of the column is neglected.

5. Column is long and fails due to buckling only.

6. Shorting of the column due to direct compression is neglected.

7. The stresses do not exceed the limit of proportionality.

N/mm2 tensile in nature and 40 N/mm2 compressive in nature. Calculate the

a. Along with expression state parallel axis theorem and perpendicular axis theorem

b. Find MI of semicircular lamina having radius 80 mm, about horizontal and

vertical centroidal axes.

c. Calculate MI about centroidal horizontal and vertical axes for the channel section

as shown in Fig. No. 1.

d) Calculate the force required to punch a hole of 25 mm diameter in a plate of 3 mm

thickness. Take permissible shear stress as 120 MP

Q.3) Attempt any TWO of the following. 08 Marks

a. A square rod 10 mm  10 mm in cross section and 1 m long is fixed at both

ends. Calculate magnitude and nature of temperature stress induced due to rise

in temperature of 50 C. Also find end reaction. Take E = 2  105 MPa and  =

12  10–6/ C.

b. A bar 4m long is fixed at one end and there is a gap of 2mm between the

other end and the support. Calculate the stress induced if it is heated through

i) 250 c and ii)500 c if α =12×10-6 /0c.

c. A cube of 100 mm side is subjected to stresses along three directions such that

x = 80 N/mm2 (tensile)y = 60 N/mm2 (compressive) and z = 0. Calculate

strains in all three directions. Also calculate change in volume of cube. Take E

= 2  105 N/mm2 ,  = 0.25.

d. Determine the Magnitude of force P and the total elongation of a bar as shown

in Fig. No. (3). Take E = 210 GPa.

Q.4) Attempt any THREE of the following. 12 Marks

a. A metal bar 20 mm wide, 15 mm thick and 2.8m long, is subjected to an axial

pull of 36 kN. Calculate changes in length, width and thickness. Also calculate

change in volume of rod. Take 5 E = 1.80 ×10 N/mm2 and μ = 0.32 .

b. A cube of 120mm side is subjected to a direct load of 48 kN on all faces.

Determine change in volume if E=200Gpa and 1/m=0.25.

c. Draw SPD and BMD for an overhanging beam as shown in Fig. No. 4.

Determine maximum B.M and also locate point of contra flexure.

d. A cast iron column 4m long with both ends fixed carries a safe

compressive load of 800 KN. Using Euler’s equation, calculate the

diameter of column. Take E=2X105 N/mm2 and Factor of safety = 4.

e. A 3m long hollow circular column with 200 mm as external diameter and

150mm as internal diameter is fixed at both the ends. Determine the

Rankine’s crippling load if α = and fc=320N/mm

c. Solve the following

i) A simply supported beam has span 8m carries a point load of 50 kN

stress is not to exceed 150Mpa, along with stress distribution

diagram.

ii) A rectangular beam having cross-section 100 × 200 mm deep is

subjected to a shear force of 20 kN. Find the shear stress at
