KVIC Building at Varanasi. The intent of this document is to identify and record
all the pertinent input requirements, analysis & design criteria for structural
design of the building. It is aimed at formulating the basis of the structural
analysis, design & detailing work that the Structural Engineer is planning in
delivering the structural scheme of the building which will be compatible with
the architectural design satisfy the functional needs, at the same time
conforming to the Indian Standards and other applicable building norms to
safe, stable, strong and yet optimally economical structure.

The parameters adopted in this report are going to be the basis of the
structural analysis & design calculations. This report covers the minimum
design requirement to establish the unified design basis that will form the
overall design philosophy to be adopted in the structural design of the
proposed building.

The design will aim to achieve

 Structural & functional integrity.
 Desirable Structural performance under characteristic service design
loads.
 Resistance to loads due to natural phenomena i.e. wind, earthquake or
snow (If required).
 Structural durability & maintainability.
 Economical Structure.

2.2 Design Philosophy

The proposed Building will be having FOUR floors (Ground, First, Second, &
Third floor) with a provision of one additional floor for probable future
expansion. Hence the building will be designed for a total of five (5) floors.
The structural system comprises of RCC framed structure. Columns are spaced
at locations such that the stability and utility are fulfilled. Soil bearing capacity
shall be considered as per the Soil Investigation Report. Accordingly, the sizing
of foundations shall be done. Brick work shall be with Fly ash bricks unless
otherwise stated. Terrace water proofing shall be done with brick bat Koba as
per DSR specifications and Heat Resistant Terrace Tiles shall be fixed over it.

2.4.3 Wind Loads

The wind pressure shall be calculated based on the data furnished

below and other provisions laid in IS: 875.

However, since the seismic force shall be more hazardous,

wind forces are not considered in design.

2.4.4 Seismic Loads

The loading due to earthquake is assessed based on the provisions

of IS: 1893. Delhi lies in Zone-IV. The following factors are
considered

Zone factor 0.16

Response reductions factor (R) 5.0
Importance factor 1.2
Type of soil Medium

Structural analysis will be performed to obtain the design seismic

forces and its distribution to different levels along the height of the
building and to various lateral load resisting elements. The
reinforcement detailing will be according to IS: 13920.

2.4.5 Soil Loads

Soil loads on retaining walls:

For the purpose of design of retaining structures such as
basement, under-ground water tanks, retaining walls to sustain
level differences, soil load with surcharge loads will be considered.
Vehicular movement loads will also be considered wherever
applicable.

2.6 PROPOSED APPROACH OF STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
The building is a R.C.C. framed structure. Space frame model of the
building shall be generated on computer and the same will be analyzed
for the effects of vertical and lateral loads that are imposed on the
structure.
Floor analysis of typical floors shall be done for vertical loads with entire
building space frame. The permissible values of the load factors and
stresses will be utilized within the purview of the Indian Standards. The
computer analysis will give member forces, reactions at foundation level
and deflection pattern of the entire structure as well as individual
members. This data will then be used to design the structural members.
Some re-runs of the analysis might be required for arriving at the
optimum structural space frame characteristic that satisfy the strength
and stability criteria in all respects.

2.7 STRUCTURAL DESIGN METHODOLOGY

All R.C.C. structures will be designed according to the Limit State Method
as specified in IS: 456. Steel structures will be designed as per IS: 800.
International codes, technical papers, brochures etc. may be referred for
special design considerations. Materials of construction will be
predominantly concrete with consideration for strength and durability.
