Assignment -1 (CO1)

(QUANTUM MECHANICS)

1. Calculate the smallest grazing angle at which the X-ray of λ=1.449Å will be reflected
from a quartz crystal which has the atomic spacing d=4.225Å.

2. An electron and a proton have the same de-broglie wavelength. Prove that the energy
of electron is greater than proton.

3. Show that if the uncertainty in the location of the particle is equal to its de-broglie
wavelength, then the uncertainty in its velocity is equal to its velocity.

4. Consider a particle confined in a 1-D box of width l. Find the probability that the
particle is found between x=0 &x=l/n, when it is in the nth state.

5. An electron constrained to move in a 1-D box of length 0.1nm. Find the first 3 energy
eigen values and the corresponding de-broglie wavelengths. Also plot the corresponding
eigen functions.

6. The uncertainty relation Δx. Δpy=0 is true or false. Justify your answer.

7. An electron and a proton are moving with the same velocity. Find the ratios of their:
(a) de-broglie wavelength (b) phase velocity (c) Group velocity.

8. The eigen functions for a particle in a 1-D box are given by:

Ψ(x) = (2/a)1/2sin(mπx/a)

Find the expectation value of position and momentum in the nth quantum state.

9. Calculate the de-broglie wavelength of a mass 1Kg moving at a speed of 10m/s. Find the
permitted energies and state whether the energy levels are quantized or continuous.

10. Are the energy levels of a particle in a box equally spaced? Show with appropriate
equation.

11. Find the permitted energy levels of an electron in a 1-D box of length a=0.2nm.

12. Find the phase and group velocities of an electron who’s de-broglie wavelength is 2 Å.

13. Wavelengths can be determined with accuracies of 1 part in 106. What is the uncertainty
in the position of a 1Å x-ray photon when its wavelength is simultaneously measured?
14. A hydrogen atom is 0.53Å in radius. Use uncertainty principle to estimate the minimum
energy an electron can have in this atom.

15. An excited atom has an average lifetime of 5 x 10-8sec. During this time-period it emits a
photon and return to the ground state. What is the minimum uncertainty in the frequency of
this photon?

16. Compare the uncertainties in the velocity of a proton and an electron contained in a 20Å
box.

17. Show that the eigen functions of a particle in a 1-D box are orthogonal.

18. The wave-function of a certain particle is

Ψ= Acos2x for all -π/2<x<π/2

(a) Find the value of constant A.

(b) Find the probability that the particle be found between x=0 & x=π/4.

19. Show that Ψ(x)=eiKx is an acceptable eigen function where K is some finite constant. For
the region -a<x<a, normalise the given eigen function.

20. What do you understand by Quantum Mechanical tunnelling?
