Geotechnical Engineering - Slope Stability (Undergraduate Level)

1. Introduction

Pile foundations are deep foundation systems used to transfer heavy loads from superstructures to deeper,

more stable soil or rock strata. They are used when shallow soils are weak or unstable.

2. Types of Piles

- Based on Material: Concrete, Steel, Timber

- Based on Installation:

- Driven Piles (precast concrete, H-steel)

- Bored Cast-in-Place Piles

- Screw or Helical Piles

3. Load Carrying Mechanism

- End Bearing: Load transferred to hard stratum at pile tip

- Skin Friction: Load resisted along shaft interface

- Combined Resistance

4. Key Formulas

1. **Ultimate Load Capacity (End Bearing + Skin Friction):**

Q_ult = Q_b + Q_s

Q_b = A_b * q_b

Q_s = Sum (alpha * c * A_s) or Sum (f_s * A_s)

2. **Allowable Load:**

Q_all = Q_ult / FOS

3. **Settlement Check (Elastic Shortening):**

delta = (Q * L) / (A * E)

5. Diagram: Pile Foundation

6. Design Considerations

- Geotechnical capacity from borehole data

- Structural capacity of pile material

- Spacing and group effect

- Installation method and quality control

- Settlement and serviceability limits

7. Conclusion

Pile foundations provide deep support and stability for structures in challenging soil conditions. Accurate

geotechnical assessment and careful construction practices are essential for safe and economical design.
