Lime Full

Lime is classified into three main types: Quicklime, Hydrated lime, and Hydraulic lime, each with distinct properties and uses. Quicklime is produced from limestone and has a high affinity for water, while Hydrated lime is its hydrated form, and Hydraulic lime contains clay, allowing it to set underwater. Lime has various applications, including in the production of calcium carbide, reducing sulfur dioxide emissions, and treating sewage and drinking water.

Classification
Lime is available in the market in three main types
which are
(i) Quicklime
(ii) Hydrated lime
(iii)Hydralic lime
Lime Cycle
Quicklime
 Quickilme:also called Fat lime,Rich lime,Pure lime.
 In it CaO is grater than (93%) by weight remaining being MgO and very
little clay.
 Quicklime is amorphous white material. It has very high affinity for
water and carbon dioxide.
CaO+ C02 = CaCO3
CaO+ H20 = Ca(OH)2 [ Slaked lime]
Ca(OH)2+ CO2= CaCO3+ H2O
Manufacturing
The essential raw material for the manufacturing of quick lime is
a rock called Limestone CaCO3.
CaCO3 → CaO+ CO2
Hydrated Lime
It is that lime to which sufficient quantity of water has
already been at the manufacturing stage to hydrate(slake) it
completely.
 In composition it is Ca(OH)2.
 In structure it is in powder form.
 It comes in ready to use to fat lime that has to be hydrated
or slaked before using.
 Lime can also be converted to hydrated form at the place of
construction. The method is called slaking of lime.
Hydraulic lime
It is different in chemical composition form fat lime in that it contains a definite amount of
clay in addition to CaO,clay content in hydralic lime may range from 1to 36% by weight.
This clay plus lime composition gives the hydraulic lime a property of hydraulicity.
(a) Contains some amount of ferrous oxide and clay.
(b) Sets under water due to hydraulic property.
(c) Depending of amount of clay its further classified as
1.Feeble Hydraulic Lime: Clay content 5-10%. Sets under water within in a month or more.
2.Moderately Hydraulic Lime: Clay content 11-20%.Sets under water in about a week.
3.Clay content 21-30%.Sets under water in 24 hours.
Uses of CaO
(1)The production of Calcium carbide,CaC2
2 CaO(s) + 5 C(s) → 2 CaC2(s) + CO2(g)
Calcium carbide reacts with water, releasing acetylene, C2H2.
CaC2(s) + 2 H2O(l) → C2H2(g) + Ca(OH)2(aq)
Acetylene is an important fuel for welding and is also a starting material for a range of organic
compounds, including vinyl chloride, neopren and acrylonitrile, all of which are raw materials for
polymers.
2) Lime is used in stack gas scrubbers to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions from power plants.
Sulfur dioxide reacts with lime to form solid calcium sulfite.
SO2(g) + CaO(s) → CaSO3(s)
(3) Lime is also added to sewage to remove phosphates.
3 CaO(s) + 3 H2O(l) + 2 PO43−(aq) → Ca3(PO4)2(s) + 6 OH−(aq)
The pretreatment of water supplies involves the use lime to decrease the acidity, to soften, and
to clear drinking water.
